Are these settings in the Nvidia control panel under the 3D area? I've been scared to play with those. Do you have any recommendations?

I use the NVIDIA App with the overlay and game filters enabled. A nice feature about the NVIDIA App is that you don't need to sign in.

Here are the filters I use (the order in the list does matter).

Color:
Tint Color 41 %
Tint Intensity 8%
Temperature 2
Vibrance 24

Sharpen:
Sharpen 30%
Ignore Film Grain 30%

Brightness / Contrast:
Exposure -20%
Contrast 20%
Highlights 100%
Shadows 34%
Gamma 34%

Details:
Sharpen 0%
Clarity 70%
HDR Toning 60%
Bloom 10%

A second part of my setup is that I use DSR.

And lastly, I have the game gamma correction set to zero and character lighting at 40.
