that is all. sorry for the shitpost but im actually shocked. was watching preach and zepla go through the story and heard the english for the first time and i felt like i didnt even wanna keep watching. feeling second hand embarrassment.

I mean shitpost aside I agree. Ive played with JP voices from the start. Not to put people down for wanting to enjoy the EN voice acting, thats fine for them. But hearing the complaints about Wuks voice and Zone 4 of the MSQ was interesting lol. Meanwhile Daisuke Ono as Zoraal Ja absolutely killed. I was very pleased with the JP voice acting this time around.

I don't find anything wrong with Wuk's EN voice.
Yeah, her emotional expression isn't typically anime-esque over the top and more subtle but it's there when you actually care to listen to her voice.

I just wish they'd actually voice the entire MSQ. this constant back and forth between mute and voiced cutscenes is ... weird, to say the least.

its weird. i've never really heard from english talking people the engish va is good. mostly negativ things.
and then we have the german community with so many people being obsessed with english.
they say the german va is garbage (some of it is but there are also some pretty good ones and many okay ones) and no matter what the english one is so much better. and everytime there is a difference they always go 'what? in english its like this. thats different... cringe.... bad'. often to see in twitch chats.

and im like: 'if you want good va then change it to japanese'... but no they would have to read even in the voiced cutscenes how terrible... and also compare the translation to japanese not that sometimes inaccurat english localization

Personally, I think some of the english voice actors are p decent or very nice but of course that is my subjective opinion (I really like the voices of G'raha's, Erenville's, and Krile's. The twins are also pretty nicely voiced). I will say, Wuk Lamat definitely does sound flat and her accent does not sound natural. Beyond that her EN voice acting is... okay. Nothing to write home about.

The only time I really hear people disparage the English cast is either the original A Realm Reborn cast (except Merlwyb, she was amazing.) which were so bad they all got replaced for Heavensward or when people are comparing it to the JP dub. I'm an English enjoyer and think they all do a marvelous job in their roles. Wuk Lamat is the first *truly* notable misstep but I am thinking it may be a voice direction problem mixed with a VA who is inexperienced which is a disasterous combination. I only think Wuk Lamat is such a big mistep since she has so much voiced dialogue. I'm sure there's plenty of bit part characters with worse voice acting but they aren't around for 30 hours. haha

I personally don't care for the anime-like overacting that I've seen in the JP voiceover. I will say the English voices in DT are weird, though.

I know people love to single out Wuk Lamat but she's hardly the only one with problems. Thancred sounds so raspy/breathy in his first line that I genuinely thought the VA was going for him being older and gruffer at first, until he spoke normally again later. Y'Shtola sounds like she's on the other side of the room from where the mic is placed. Multiple characters were clearly not given context for their lines, especially Alphinaud. Raha has sounded off to me since the Endwalker patches, like he's sick of being the WoL's biggest fanboy. Krile goes from sounding like she's full of energy but gentle to completely flat and emotionless for no apparent reason. I swear the only VA who delivered a consistently good performance this time around was Erenville. With him, what I question is the fact that he has a very strong (I assume) Icelandic accent but the people who come from the same area he does do not. He sounds like the Viera from the First, which I find extremely weird. I quite liked their choice of making all Viera have an accent like this but it seems it has been completely forgotten in DT.

The mix is off and I swear the sound engineers just didn't come to work when DT was being made. I have no clue what the voice director was thinking with the delivery of some of those lines. Maybe they have changed recording studios or something? It irks me because I have been shown in previous expansions that they can do better, so I was quite shocked when what I received this time around harkens back to ARR. It's serviceable but a noticeable downgrade.

thats interesting. i didnt pay attention to thancred, but there were people pointing that out in german too. the exact same thing pretty early in DT

this is generally how i feel with EN dubs too. I grew up with english speaking but the general voice direction (IMO) in JRPGs and japanese media is done much better in JP.

Again thats not to say all EN dubs are bad and none are good. (Gurren Lagann is a perfect example of a fantastic EN dub that I prefer to the JP version) people are allowed to play with what they like.
