The saving of settings is okay as is.

It's really not. It should be automated. The client could detect if the settings changed and only upload them if they have, it could also upload diffs to minimize the size if bandwidth is a concern (but it should not be, usually bandwidth is expensive upstream, not downstream). The current system is just lazy.
