Tab Target System has been hindering the game since launch. Yes, again.. we have to.

I have been playing XIV on and off since launch and I recently came back again and made another new character. The game is fantastic so its definitely no surprise that we keep coming back.
This Tab Target System though... its borderline impossible. In PvE and most of all PvP. Even with all the work arounds with the cone system and using 2 buttons to tab target for near and cycle it still works very poorly.
How is this still a thing after 14 years? Can't you guys just take a page from WoW or almost any other tab target MMO out there? XIV could really use a serious boost in the overall UX department, it's really lacking. Pretty please? For Dawntrail maybe?
Love you guys, keep up the good work!

    The

    Target Nearest Enemy

    and

    Target Nearest NPC or Object

keybinds handle basically all the targeting I need to do. Tabbing is only a very small amount of my targeting, and it's only unpredictable when trying to target a central trash mob for AoE in a dungeon. In that particular case, it doesn't super matter because if I don't hit the optimal target it adds maybe 5 seconds to the run when one mob survives.

What are you talking about ? Tab targeting in this game is just terrible und unpredictable.
"Oh you want to target the enemy right infront of you pushing tab? Well to bad let me select an enemy somewhere on the edge of the screen you can't even attack becuase it is too far away."

It feels clunky at best, are you one of the "one game andies" that has no experience outside of FF14?

It's clunky but I don't have too much trouble with it. What I really hate is the lack of "target of target".

I am pretty sure there is a button for that.

I mean it is the function I have on my R3 button on Controller.

It’s a good thing not to answer your enemies. I scarcely ever do. Perhaps Emily is more like me than I am like myself. Perhaps she would rather not answer her friends, even. She keeps it all in her heart.

Check the keybindings menu, it's in there. Being a Sage, I use it all the time, so it's bound to the buttom below my thumb on my mouse.

In fact, I have targeting functions bound to five of the fourteen buttons on my ROCCAT Tyon: target-nearest, tab-target, backtab-target, target-self, and target-target-of-target.

[The ROCCAT Tyon is a fantastic MMO mouse (see https://www.rtings.com/mouse/reviews/roccat/tyon), but unfortunately they haven't made it for years. Because ours are getting old, we recently bought three more new-in-box from eBay sellers in Korea. And for our right hands we use custom Azeron Cyborgs, but that's another story.]

Why would you tab target the thing right in front of you instead of using the Target Nearest Enemy keybind which will 100% always target the nearest enemy right in front of you? That's not a problem with the tab targeting system; that's a problem with people not using the right button for the task.

I use Target Nearest Enemy and Target Nearest NPC or Object so often that they are bound to my [G] and [V] keys so my fingers don't have to move very far at all to press them. I also have a secondary Target Nearest Enemy bind on [\] which is in resting position for my other hand. Other people should bind them to keys similarly close to their resting positions because they will use these keys that often once they know they exist to be bound. It would eliminate the vast majority of people's targeting complaints.

If you just want the closest target then yes, its easy. But most of the time that's not what you want.

I use 2 buttons to target on my mouse, one that selects the closest one and the other that cycles from nearest to farthest. This, plus cone option is the best setup that I have found and it still works poorly compared to any other TT system where you only need 1 button.

This issue becomes way more apparent in PvP since the targets aren't just brainless bots with predictable movement patterns, but, it is still very annoying in PvE. When stuffs moving faster you're seriously out of luck.
Want to target a mob in the middle of a cluster to make sure you AoE properly? Out of luck. Want to target one of the mobs that you know is going to cast something you need to interrupt? Better start cycling as earlier as possible or you might as well forget it. Want to target someone or something to teleport to, shirk to, buff, whatever...? Better make a macro and pray you got the right positions because if you don't not even the macro can help you.

All this coupled with the fact that to simple mouse click a target to select it is also extremely clunky. If said target is not alone and is in a cluster, good luck fighting the hitbox pixel battle to be able to select what you want.

SE is a multi billion dollar company and XIV is currently the most played MMO in the world. They got loads of talent working on this. How can it be that basic things like the TT system has not been fixed yet? I think its fantastic when we want to defend the company that makes the product we love, but everyone should always be happy to see that product improve. We all win here.

I really hope they do something about this for Dawntrail.
    GG to you all!
