Desynth and turning in for GC seals are also legitimate uses. It's rare that anyone "needs" a dungeon drop for an actual gear upgrade because they're usually already using better gear.

So yes, ask for it if there are others with the ability to Need on the item in the party. I've gone back several times and changed my Greed to a Pass for someone who wanted the item for one of their other jobs and not the job they were using in the dungeon.

A little polite conversation can have positive results. You'll get the occasional sour puss but most are happy to help out.

Feels like too much effort to ask every time? Then it must not be that much of an upgrade after all.

The system as it is set up is fair. Everyone participated in earning the loot, so everyone plays by the same rules. If you can roll need on something and you want it - for whatever reason - then that is valid. If you arent playing on a class that can roll need, you have the same option to roll greed as everyone else. And i will confirm what most of the others have pointed out, if you ask for something you will often get it. I have no idea if something would be an upgrade for you. ESPECIALLY if you arent playing the class it dropped for. So yes, in this case YOU need to take the extra step of informing the party of your extra need.

Need everything not bolted down. Greed if you can't. Ask if you want it but otherwise it's going to get yoinked. Mama needs more money she will never spend.

Yes I 100% do need to Gil cap my 3rd retainer even though I literally do not spend money on anything and if I ever need need anything I will craft it myself and I already own the most expensive items in the game

    Why do you ask? /s

While I agree with your overall sentiment, I assume it's just too complicated to filter through all the variables as to whether or not someone actually needs a thing, so "you get priority if it's for your class" is close enough, enough of the time.

I do think it's good etiquette to at least roll Greed rather than Need if the item is below what you need for stats and you don't have another use for that specific item – primarily either glamour in its own right or collecting a set to force your desired glamour piece to drop.

I also wish there was a lower tier again, effectively "I don't want it, but I'll take it if it's going to end up on the floor otherwise". (Not rolling kind of achieves this, but then you have to drag out the waiting time for everyone, and you can't do it close to the final boss.)

If I was designing a loot system from scratch, I think I would make it more along the lines of having "points" to spend, like maybe still have basically the same system but for every item you win, you're charged a certain amount of points, so if you're after a specific thing then you might choose to be conservative about rolling on other items and then spend your points on an "I really want this" roll when the thing drops.

Hmmm gear isn't exactly hard to come by, leveling dungeons reward you with a random piece of gear that you don't already own on the job you're playing. I personally pass on everything below Lv50 because to me they're not worth the inventory space or the effort to change into seals and I reckon some sprouts could get some use out of it and/or use it for seals to buy their first mount or upgrade the squadron/rank (which I struggled alot with personally as a sprout), I don't really expect everyone to do this...

I asked before for items that I wanted/needed either for glam or ilvl, majority of the time you either 1. get ignored completely 2. get a few nice people willing to pass and still lose the roll to someone else.
