Confused about the Xbox "ffxiv coins"

So I just read the new lodestone post and saw they are introducing a premium currency on Xbox and all the Xbox service fees and optional items are managed with said coins.

It mentions players who play on multiple platforms can skip this and pay a standard sub fee like always on the mog station but where I have a question is in a situation where say, I have arr-ew licenses on PlayStation, and arr- dawntrail on xbox, so I still get to use the mog station as I always have? Or since dawntrail is only linked on Xbox do I have to use coins? I really wish they could've made this a little more clear.

There's also no details for folks who only play the
Xbox version and do need to buy the coins to play. Okay, so how many coins does it cost for a months subscription, or for an extra retainer etc. You have to buy the coins FIRST before you log in and manage your account. This whole headache just keeps getting worse somehow.

if its their usual thing, you will not have an account that will use playstation and xbox, your account will be one or the other. so if you have arr-ew on playstation, playing dawntrail on xbox would be an entirely different account. so beware of that. (for instance.. steam and pc are two.. different accounts.. go figure) from a read it looks like xbox may be the same, and xbox users will have a 'coins only' options, likely a microsoft thing.

for me, since it does say you can "link accounts" I would let other people experiment with that first, since you cannot unlink them

It's always been straight forward before between console and PC cause regardless it's the same mog station account but there was no weird exclusive way you had to pay a sub between PlayStation and PC. You have always been able to link PlayStation and PC accounts so long as you own licenses for both. So linking your existing account should work the same as it always has so long as you own the Xbox license. I guess I just don't know what happens when you are missing the latest expansion on other platforms now that they've introduced this convoluted new way to manage your subscription on Xbox.

The wording is a little funky but if you're playing the game via Xbox Series X|S, regardless of having other versions on your account, you'll need to use FFXIV Coins to pay for any services and cash store items when paying for them on an Xbox console itself.

This wording strongly implies that some kind of integration between the game client and Mogstation/cash store will be implemented into that version of the game. However, if you have any other platforms on your Square Enix account then you can bypass this function entirely and pay using an alternative payment method on the Mogstation/cash store website.

We've only got a few days to wait in order to see what this actually looks like in-game so I'll be waiting on that.

It's not that they're two different accounts, it's that they only expect you to use one or the other, presumably because they are both ultimately PC licences. There is no such issue between PC-or-Steam and PlayStation accounts.

were that the case, then I should be able to transfer my steam character to a strictly SE account so I do not have to use steam... yet one cannot. If that were even remotely possible, I know I, and others, would have done so a while ago.

I think it's a unique situation between steam and PC because like someone else mentioned, I don't think they expect folks to want both a steam license and a PC license since both versions are played on a PC. Regardless, PlayStation and steam, or PlayStation and PC have never had any problems being linked onto one account. That is primarily what this thread is about. The wording in the lodestone post says previously used accounts can be linked. That is not the confusing part. The confusing part is how the Xbox currency ties into a linked account. Specifically a situation where some expansions are registered on one platform and not the other.

When using the Xbox interface to access your account, you will use FFXIV coins.

When using other methods, such as a web browser on your PC, other payment methods will be available.

    It's that simple!

It does seem to suggest that if you don't have other platforms attached on the account, then it might still want you to use the Xbox + FFXIV coins for payment, but since you said you have other platforms, you should be able to handle it all via the website.

You should be able to pay the subscription fee without these coins at least. Since buying expansions is platform-specific, you may end up buying the Xbox ones via the Xbox interface, which would still require FFXIV coins, but you could also try buying it from a retailer such as Amazon or the Xbox website for a normal currency.

I have no idea why they decided to do the FFXIV Coins thing, as far as I can tell it's just an extra step for payment in the Xbox version... It's essentially the Xbox specific version of Crysta.

Yeah I guess that's the part that I. Worried about, I guess we will just have to wait and see.
