Most people suck, hence that’s why communities mostly suck too. XIV is no different. When you find people you like, keep them close. That’s all there’s to it.

Two completely different eras. The game was populated by normal MMO players back in ARR/HW, many of whom migrated from FFXI, of which XIV still had somewhat similar elements to. Everything was still relatively humble at the time. Considering the vast majority of players are in their 20s and that was 10 years ago, it's no surprise most of them gradually moved on and got replaced.
The people spamming buzzwords like "toxic" when you ask why they're only pressing one button are this latter generation. This also ties into other recent anomalies, such as all the various complaints about the game being too easy and stale, the influx of wacky dance emotes and cutesy loporrit cutscenes, the banal streamers and "content creators", the heckin' memes and fanart, the ERP epidemic, the WoW whinging, and the existence of Discord. Most of this shifted in ShB/EW.
What other online multi-player games have you been playing that makes you think this is the worst?
What specifically have you witnessed in this game to make you think that the community is the worst?
That definitely does not match my personal experience in 18 years of playing online multi-player games. Any player community has its problem elements but this one also has some positive elements that were totally lacking in other games I've played.

I haven't really experienced any issues in the actual game. Worst I've had in recent memory was someone being a bit sour and passive-aggressive (1 comment) over someone taking too long to roll for an orchestrion roll in, uhh.. O3N? If I recall.
It was I who stole it, but to be fair, I first put it on the markerboard for a high price, but I was continuously being undercut by 1 gill by a grey Miquo'te. Thankfully I found a random Hyur with a mustache to buy it!

You mean the Players? or the Community?
I would argue this is one of the better communities out there because of its rules, the active enforcement of the rules, and how the developers and organizers keep the community engaged outside and inside of the game world.
Players can be truly toxic regardless of the game or place we find them in, what matters is how theses players are dealt with and the system that is used to repermained them. Is it perfect? no, far from it, but at least we have a system.
But as for the OP, i would suggest that if you do run into people giving you problems or issues; depending on the severity of the issue- to consider making use of the report function in-game.
I don't know if the question/comment the OP poised is genuine or sincere, but i personally will die on this hill that the FFXIV community is the best community in mmorpg gaming; at least from my personal experience.
Journey to all fish: 1383/1729 (348 remaining) [79%]
it isn't that bad.
Bold bit is a bit of a stretch if we're gonna be real considering how many people get stalked without any form of help from the staff. They're on point with stopping people from helping others in dungeons though and scaring people into not wanting to speak because of that. You mean the Players? or the Community?

I keep seeing this, but I help people in dungeons all the time and I've never heard from a GM about it. Of course, most of the people complaining about it have a hostile or insulting tone while complaining, so I don't think it's the helping part that's actually getting reported.

Eden Tier 2, Casually was lvling my SCH, told a guy about how they should use rampart and TBN during pulls, said it in the nicest way possible as the 3 mobs per pack were nuking them, literally. I was a tank main that tier and was oh snap neat a new DRK, and their BRD friend got so pissy with me, I dropped it cuz I just laugh at white knights like that and got a warning from a gm. I have no reason to lie if I was nice or not as I have zero problems telling people their idiots in this game, but that situation really made me not wanna help a lot of new players when I saw em after that.
