This game was supposedly built to be the next FFXI. In my eyes it is. FFXI laid the foundation (blueprint) for what FFXIV could be but with a different story, playable content, graphics, etc. FFXIV is the successor to FFXI. At least that's what I've "heard."

You mean the same way FF VIII based on FF VII? Sure, another world, another story, another game mechanics. But both are in 3D and have the same races.
