In terms of specifically the question regarding class fantasies I miss:

While I don't really mind Bard the way some people do, I do like the more pure Archer class theme we get before the job; the focus on just shooting and putting additional effects on the arrows (poison + wind magic respectively, for the DoTs) was neat, as opposed to Bard that focuses a lot more (reasonably) on the song aspect in its job quests and lore. I doubt they'll ever revisit the Archer concept in something new for various reasons, but it'd be neat to get something like it as a full job.

I really loved learning all of the old class and job lore. I particularly fell in love with Arcanist and the idea of aetherial geometry, and the explanation surrounding how DOTs like Bio work by reducing the aetherial composition of a being. Plus your auto attacks are thwopping the monsters with your book. I literally leveled ACN to 10 by auto attacking monsters in Middle La Noscea to death with the Weathered Grimoire. The concept of aetherial geometry seemed more interesting to me than what SMN and SCH were introduced as (specialized Arcanists, really). It tracked into the way Ascian society wound up operating in days of yore, too. Like lost knowledge found again. In that way, I guess it really hasn't been left behind.

I really rather like the Ninja back story. Karasu Redbeak is a top tier character, as are Oboro and Tsubame. Still waiting on the WoL to somehow unlock the 4th Mudra that the evil Ninja master uses against you in the level 50 genkai fight.

The entire Gladiator storyline revolving around the Alacran, Aldis, and Mylla is pretty solid too. The swordsman tournament PLD got in Stormblood was peak job class questing, and I would love those characters to come back again, and to also know why swordsmen from all over have such different styles/different elements that they use. Like that one Roe had all earth elements and like boulder drops. The Ishgardian Knight had light orbs. Aldis as Black Lotus had Plunge as a PLD, amongst other things. It really made it seem like PLD should just be called Knight or Swordsman instead of having the PLD label forced upon it.

The Lancer guildmaster had some sort of connection with the boars of the forest, and that kind of related more to being Gridanian I guess, but those quests also centered around this idea of tempering your courage and resolve to face danger and hardship. Going against Foulques's idea of fearlessness. Really stuck with me, for some reason.

The Monk questline from ARR presenting the idea that you could gain power and open your "chakras" by doing battle in places with strong aether/aether of the departed was also really cool. I really loved how the NPC giving you the quests was an Ala Mhigan historian, and you could opt into the lore behind both Monk and Ala Mhigo, and get introduced to The Autumn War and the fact that apparently the Ala Mhigans had heavy lancers that rode Griffins into combat. Really made me wish we'd gotten a Griffin Rider class or something.

(Not to mention that the job is just called ナイト -- "Naito", i.e., "Knight" -- in Japanese. "Paladin" was a localization choice, and personally, I don't think it's an entirely unfitting one... Though I'm betting the team just thought it sounded more exciting and evocative than the alternative.)

Oddly enough, the subject of the pre-soul crystal jobs was on my mind recently - I started a job I hadn't yet looked at as a result: Rogue.

Currently only at level 25 on said job, and am actually enjoying the job quests - but find it a little sad that the story will undoubtedly leave Jacke, The Stray and Underfoot behind once it's time to get a Soul Crystal and become a Ninja. I found them to be interesting characters.

It was the same with Archer - I recall feeling a little disappointed that we simply 'move on' from guilds that taught us our trade.

You do get a little more with Jacke n V'kebbe in some of the later ninja quests. I also love that you get to see V'kebbe in one of the Ast quests and outside of the Bismarck. I think Perimu Haurimu is the only rogues guild member that doesn't get put into other things later on in other quests that don't involve Limsa. I do agree that the transition from rogue to ninja is a bit clunky. Though I feel that's how it is for just the three that have a disjointed in what you were learning into what the job becomes.

I know the devs are likely considering Knights & Paladins are one and the same in FFXIV universe, but I just like to indulge this curious idea in my mind that maybe. Maybe someone in the dev team will have that funny idea of introducing a different Paladin job and naming it accordingly in Japanese.

This is because in a few FF games, Knights and Paladins are considered to be different. But it depends on the game. However most of the time they're considered different terms for the same meaning (Like FF1 Knight is a Paladin because it can casts some of the White magic, and so on)

If we were trying to salvage the HW Paladin storyline (because god knows it needs it), there'd be some solid value in having an actual storyline about a meeting between the Ul'dahn 'for queen and country'-style knights and a group of Ishgardian 'our holy will be done' paladins. English would've had some hurdles in translating it, but that could've been a really fun dynamic that shouts out the modern D&D-style paladin while making it clear that isn't what we're playing. It'd also be a clever way to bridge the fact that all the 'holy magic'-styled Paladin moves start happening in Heavensward. (fun fact: Hallowed Ground, the only exception to that, was called Invincible in Japanese.)

It also kinda skirts the issue that instead making Paladin an Ishgard-homed job like Dragoon would've had, because being a religious warrior of Ishgard would've gotten... y'know, a little awkward in Heavensward.

Well, Paladin has certainly been given holy magics like Holy Spirit and the heal, so I think Paladin actually fits more at least from a skillset perspective... lorewise, I can't remember anything from the Paladin job quests lmao

I really want a nature based job, probably a healer. And no, WHM having flower effects doesn't count.

When people were speculating Green Mage for Dawntrail, I was kind of on board for a druid-like plant mage rather than Ivalice's debuff mage
