    Instant Portraits - Annoying??

Anybody else annoyed by the Instant Portrait function? It requires an edit every time you change your gear in any way? For each Job? How about it just auto-clicks edit and Save, so you get face camera / sparkles and the correct border without doing that each time you change a ring or something? How about that?

With 15 jobs, isn't it a bit much to have this thing needing edits all the time?

    Whatever

I turned it off and ignore it. As someone who switches jobs all the time, it's too annoying to have to reset it every single time. Let me just set one picture to keep or I'm not gonna bother.

Switching jobs isn't what breaks it – the trigger is changing the appearance of the gear in your current gearset (or your actual character appearance) compared to the last time you saved your portrait. If you switch any gear and don't reapply the same glamours to match what is in the portrait, even if the item isn't visible in the portrait, that is what causes it to break.

Fixing it requires you to save the updated gearset, then go to "edit portrait" and save it even if you're not manually changing anything in the portrait.

Surely there is a simpler way for this to be set up? Ideally it would only break if our current class doesn't match the portrait, to prevent any weird poses from things combining strangely, but it should just reference our current appearance instead of checking against some previous saved list.

The system is designed in a way that it works when you link a glamour plate to a gearset. Then the portrait gets automatically updated (when you switch to the gearset).

But of course then you have to go to the dresser every time you want to change your glamour. And there are more jobs than glamour plates available...

Like nobody wants to use it that way. Having portraits update your current gear automatically is what people want, without the link to the glamour plate. It should just show what you are currently wearing. And it already works like that for hairstyles. You don't have to update your portrait when you change your hair.

It’s a good thing not to answer your enemies. I scarcely ever do. Perhaps Emily is more like me than I am like myself. Perhaps she would rather not answer her friends, even. She keeps it all in her heart.

I kinda just wish you could use one portrait for everything and not have to deal with it breaking because you slotted a materia on some random item

The portrait doesn't get automatically updated; the gear gets automatically updated to match the portrait because it's getting re-glamoured to match the portrait every time you equip it. And even then you could break it by changing some equipment after the glamours have been applied.

I've never understood why other people seem to struggle with such a basic system. The only way I end up with a broken portrait is if I, for example, get new gear for BRD and then later on quickly update my gear for DNC and then queue for something without checking it. The system isn't broken, you're just lazy with no problem solving skills.

Here's a tip, though: If your portrait says it's fine but you know it isn't (i.e. you just changed something) or want to be certain, use visor or show/hide hat, update it, then revert the change if you wanted it a specific way. Then you're fine. It's not that hard. If doing that is Too Annoying then I truly don't know how you ever survive doing anything that has more than one step. If that's too hard, just don't bother with it then. Leave it default. No one else cares.

some people will never know how easy it is to fix portraits and use them the way the developers intended with the character menu, but most of you still make macros to put glamour plates on your jobs when the game can literally do it for you, learn how to do that first

I usually remember to fix it if I need too but it is annoying. I wish I could also use whatever I like to wear and it stay at that for my portrait.

The only thing that annoys me about it is getting notified that my portrait has been restored to default because something isn't matching once I enter the duty. Please prompt me as soon as I queue. It only takes me a second to fix it. I put the effort to create a portrait so it shows up in duties. Please don't punish my effort for caring about this system.
