You're not flipping their character model, you're flipping their animation. There aren't many issues with flipping just one of them, because our character models and gear pieces are pretty symmetrical. It would probably not lead to a significant amount of clipping.

If one side of our characters were drastically different than the other, flipping the animations without flipping the models would be problematic.

This would lead to a slew of clipping issues considering the armour in the game has a tendency to be less than symetrical.

I've barely noticed any gear that is very asymmetric. There are some differences, sure, but those I've seen haven't been big.

Warrior AF is the biggest offender in this catagory considering one hand has a giant pauldron that the other does not. It's more common than you would think.

Totally symmetrical even split right down the middle. Remember the weapon is part of the gear. That would instantly flip sides whenever a mirrored animation played

The weapon is an obvious problem, I'll admit. The rest is symmetrical enough for it to have worked. I'm sure SE would know how hard it would be to actually implement it. Maybe most animations would work with minor edits done to them, while those that needed big changes would be in the minority.

If you actually do decide to flip the character models along with the animations, would there be any cases where this would look wonky outside of cutscenes?

You're forgetting hairstyles that aren't symmetrical. Those would flip, face marks and scars would flip, and a variety of other things. It would looks sloppy and unfinished at best.

As far as flipping models, there are animations that would be affected, such as characters reaching out to give/accept object to NPCs and such. Basically, the only realistic way I see this happening is if they make a whole new animation set of left handed characters, which as I said, is a pretty big deal.

The facial tattoos and scars are textures on the character model, and they wouldn't flip if only the animations flipped. Don't think the hair would either. The weapon most likely would, though, because its position is part of the animation data, unlike the character's textures. Hair animations are (well, can be if turned on) animated with realtime physics so that likely wouldn't be affected either, or it would be easy to make it not be affected.

With character models+animations flipped, things like reaching out for items would look off, but many of the cutscenes where things like that happens, the characters' hands often don't actually touch anyway. Maybe a minor manual edit to such cutscenes would be enough, such as turning the character a few degrees to the right when they were going to grab the item.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think it might be more trouble than you think it is.

You can't just "Flip" a bunch of things gear itself also animates slightly in many instances as well spell-casting for one. But to be honest it's not like SE has really cared about clipping a whole lot as it is.
