Tbh I can agree with both perspectives regarding this topic, as jobs like smn have become extremely boring to play and feel like they have no flavor. Other jobs though, while doing higher level or high end content , can be literally impossible to use your entire kit as needed 100% of the time due to having too many buttons all over the place. Speaking from a controller perspective. A lot of errors happen with controller input as it is, so if there's too many then it only causes problems for more than just the person pushing the buttons but also the people they party with. I personally think there should be a cap of 32 buttons on hotbar slots for every job. Having actions that auto change to others within that 32 is exactly what's needed to prevent the game getting overly clunky combat controls.

In my humble opinion, no job should have more than 24 abilities, not including role abilities. Two bars worth, max. Just make them more about quality then quantity.

... Yet another reason why the use of a controller should not necessarily be permitted.

And I know my answer is rather unsympathetic, sorry. But let's just say that console integration is starting to become far too restrictive in a number of ways.

The big problem is that limiting the number of actions would force the devs to adopt a radically different gamedesign from what we've had in previous expansions. Lately it's worked like this: adding one or two skills, sometimes unnecessary, but without ever reviewing the system in depth, except for 'critical' classes. It's also quite dangerous when you consider the reactions sometimes... Strong, as soon as there's a change that goes too far.

That's understandable. And I play on PC with keyboard and MMO mouse, I want to use my buttons. That's why making it optional would be the best solution! Combat settings: original or modern, you pick the one you prefer. That's all they need to make everyone happy. Options are good, let people play however they want.

Controllers aren’t limited to 32 buttons, they have 48

If you don’t know how to use 48 then you aren’t using the cross hotbar system properly

Controllers aren’t a problem at all and arguing controller support should be revoked for said reason is just a stupid non starter of an argument

Honest question, because I'm probably prejudiced about this: isn't it the navigation between the buttons in question that's causing the problem? I've seen videos where it looked extremely problematic.

Controllers haven't had issues with hotbar space for years now. Between cross hotbars, W cross hotbars, and RB/R1 switching, you have more slots than most PC setups need.

No the cross hotbars are incredibly easy to use

There is just optional extension of the bars using easy to press combos of buttons that not everyone turns on
    1) the 16 core actions (L2+circle/square/x/triangle/left/right/up/down + R2+circle/square/x/triangle/left/right/up/down)
    2) the 16 extended actions (double tap L2+circle/square/x/triangle/left/right/up/down + double tap R2+circle/square/x/triangle/left/right/up/down)
    3) the hyper extended options (L+R+circle/square/x/triangle/left/right/up/down + R+L+circle/square/x/triangle/left/right/up/down)

If you really want to get whacky you can also shift to another cross hotbar with R1+circle/square/x/triangle, for example I used to put my AOE actions on a different hotbar, using this design you functionally have 64 easy to access buttons

Controller doesn’t have remote hotbar space problems and people who think it doesn’t either don’t play on controller or don’t understand the cross hotbar system

Alright, thx for the answer. Then, no excuse for the "reduce number of buttons" position.

Another thing with controllers is there's an option to have a different hotbar available when your weapon is put sheathed/unsheathed. When I do pull out my controller every now and then, I have crossbar 8 when I'm sheathed, with crossbar 7 as a quick RB press, and crossbars 1 and 2 for unsheathed, 1 being ST and 2 being AoE. Crossbars 3 and 4 are for extended crossbars when both triggers are held. The end result is I can comfortably map all skills on any job and still have plenty of room for quick access to common menus out of combat.
