I can remember the days of real open world PvP in WoW. Tarren Mill vs. Southshore. Gurubashi Arena (the FFA zone where you could beat up your same-faction friends - or enemies). The Eastern Plaguelands Towers. Raiding the faction capitals to kill the faction leaders. Those days are long gone.

Real open world PvP doesn't exist in WoW anymore. It was destroyed by players who weren't interested in fair fights and didn't want to be on the losing side. PvP realms might have started off well enough in Vanilla and Burning Crusade but the faction imbalances that developer during Wrath (thanks to Wintergrasp and racial reworks) and got worse during later expansions effectively killed world PvP. Blizzard tried to fix it with cross realm shards introduced just before Mists of Pandaria. All that did was prove that players weren't really interested in open world PvP as the imbalances changed from bad to extreme across groups of realms. What they were really interested in was being bullies and beating up on those weaker than they were.

    Fortnite - not a MMORPG.
    PUBG - not a MMORPG

Understand that MMO includes many game types, not all of which are MMORPG. Open world PvP has not been successful within MMORPGs even if it's been successful in other MMO types.

What happened to me was Faloop users from other data centers transferring characters to Crystal to grief our hunt community toward the end of Shadowbringers. When we tried reaching out to them to compromise and get some communication going, the response we got was "use Faloop". When we said that Crystal didn't use Faloop and Faloop didn't support Crystal, the response was "not my problem".

Getting tired of the drama, I reached out to Moo to find out more about Faloop and see about getting Crystal supported on it. I wanted a general conversation that included the other concerned Crystal spawners and conductors. Moo didn't. Moo would only talk to me at first. I was stuck acting as go between, copying/pasting questions from Crystal to Moo then copying/pasting Moo's answers to Crystal.

Strike one - why would you not want to have those most impacted by the system a part of the conversation?

Moo peppered the conversation with words like "privilege" and "meritocracy". Such words didn't sit well with me or the others in Crystal. That's not how we came together when world visit was added. Sure, those of us spawning, scouting and/or conducting put more effort into the Hunt than those that just show up to kill things but we weren't asking for more than basic courtesy and cooperation in return. We enjoyed the Hunt and we wanted to share that love with the greater community.

    Strike two - elitist system

After about 2 months of intermittent conversation (Moo does very work hard and doesn't always have the time to answer questions, I'll give him that), Moo finally agreed set up a channel in the Faloop discord for Crystal spawners/conductors to come ask their questions and get answers from some of the Faloop assistants. For those on Crystal who joined, it was like talking into a void.

    Strike three.

We finally said thanks but no thanks, we're doing fine with Horus. Suddenly, Moo was more than happy to agree to support Crystal after we decided that Faloop wasn't for us. WTF? Of course it turns out that Crystal hunts were already supported in Faloop during all of that time - but access was reserved for a privileged few that were already part of Faloop, such as the person who had transferred to Crystal to grief our community. It was the Crystal community that was being denied access to what already existed.

(To be fair to Moo, he did apologize that the player causing most of the issues on Crystal had been given Faloop permissions in the first place. They hadn't realized what a problem he would be when the permissions were given.)

But honest, oh man am I out.

Sure, the bad apples are going to be everywhere. Like I said, the hypocrisy I've come across was laughable instead of something that was making me angry. Did I snitch on those I discovered were using the mod so they would lose their Faloop privileges? Nope. They were using it responsibly. Hypocritically in most cases because on the Faloop side they would openly complain about the mod users but still responsibly.

My issue with Faloop is the control hierarchy. The privilege granted to some but not all because everyone is guilty until they've been raked over the coals and proven innocent. Make an honest mistake and you were likely to be tossed back in with the guilty.

That's a terrible way to treat your fellow players. Even worse is Faloop trying to act like their rules are the official rules of the game when they aren't.

Want a really choice piece of commentary that I've only shared with one other person? While we were trying to get Dynamis hunts organized and trying decide if the Faloop bot (Discord bot not FFXIV mod for those thinking the wrong things) should be integrated into the Starbird Discord, Moo joined us in channel we used for organizing things and talked about some of the issues that would be involved in the integration. He went into some detail about what he intended with Faloop. He said Faloop was designed for worlds with "fully unified" hunt communities and that Crystal was a mistake.

Obviously I agree on the latter. I also think he's a dreamer if he thinks any world's hunt community could ever be truly unified let alone entire data centers. There are always going to be those players without an interest in being part of an organized hunt community and prefer to hunt on their own. Faloop prefers to ostracize those types of players in an attempt to force them under Faloop's thumb instead of acknowledging their right to hunt as they want and wishing them "good hunting".

No thanks. To me, attempting to control how others play the game is a worse violation of the ToS than mod use.

The Faloop app is nice enough when it comes to tracking and mapping even if I still prefer Bear for aesthetic reasons. I like to do mapping on S ranks in advance of S rank day and I'll crosspost the mapping on both apps so spawners have the information regardless of which they rely on. But the hierarchy behind Faloop is one of the ugliest things I've encountered in gaming.

Again, your mileage is going to vary depending on what data center you're playing on. Not every data center is as Faloop centric like Primal is.
