I think this just leads to more questions. When you're in a game, everyone is anonymous and equal for better or worse, until you doxx yourself... This is also why those venues are advertised as 18+.

If the creeper actively knew the age of the player and persued that then yes, absolutely that's a problem with that *specific player*.

My other concern is why this dudes kid is doxxing herself and why he's not keeping tabs on her online activities. This is the part where the parent actually needs to parent.

Certainly the adults partaking in this behavior should be more cognizant of the ages of people they may be interacting with, but that issue goes both ways. Kids will be kids and many will reach that age where they are curious about that stuff, which is all the more reason their guardian should be more hands on with their time spent in this game and many others.

I don't think that should be an excuse to give a free pass for people to be lewd with minors, but it's not solely the responsibility of the adults to tip-toe around constantly or even be outright barred from adult activities just because minors may be present or weasel their way into adult venues. It's a collective effort to make sure everyone is more responsible for their own actions, the adults of both parties and the kids, too.

I never said there was a solution.

I just said everyone needs to be more aware and smart about what they are doing. Adults shouldn't have to stop ERPing or whatever just because minors play this game, but they do need to be more aware of the possible repercussions of their actions. Ultimately the majority of the responsibility really needs to fall to the guardians of these minors, and even then all the preparation, discussion and monitoring you do won't stop a curious kid from doing what they want.

Honestly I think the whole situation isn't a terribly big deal, but of course every time I say something that I get called a groomer apologist or something equally stupid, but whatever. Sometimes I think we forget the trouble we got ourselves into as teenagers, too. Certainly some of us have had long-lasting repercussions related to those events, and I don't want to downplay those who have, but the vast majority of us came out of our rambunctious teenage years unscathed, and so will those in this game.

Ultimately it's a mountain out of a molehill, and the situation is inherently complicated, too. Everyone just needs a little more personal responsibility.

The solution is to cut down on the ads period or even do what other MMOs have done and make a seperate Advertisement channel for them that people can turn off and anything being posted outside of it will be removed instantly by the games systems and reportable. That way parents can keep kids and children safe and people who dont wanna see it don't have to. Stop the strawman bs.

The issue is context and use, words when used in specific ways will not make people wonder what they mean. Someone being approached and not knowing what it means will make them ask.

There can't seriously be that many teenagers play XIV at this point? I've been playing the game since I was 17 and the crowd I've met around my age is just non-existent.

I know OP mentions having a 14 year old daughter but there's just so many other problems besides the people on the game. People on the internet are generally just disturbing at times, let's just put it that way. If you're not looking over your kids shoulders when they're using the internet early on then you can't really be surprised at what they find. I had definitely seen and been told far worse than what OP's daughter had by that age and that was with strict parents that attempted to monitor most everything I did online. I still found ways around it for better or worse.

Also, just kind of strange to hear about someone actually going to their parent for an explanation of something. Maybe it was just me or my friends, but you either googled it or asked each other. Going to your parents with something like that is asking for trouble usually.

I'm not defending the community's lack of boundaries but the entire story just feels weird. Either spend more time looking after your kids or just accept that they're going to run into some messed up stuff out there.

There are numerous examples of NPCs that very blatantly discuss prostitution. I recall an old Zepla video from way back when where she was going around Thanalan pointing out funny or unexpected NPC dialogue, such as two women standing in a very seductive stance discussing a man of whom advises you to stay away from them as they'll give you the crotch rot. Senior Sabotender, who is a Lalafell in a mascot costume, literally gropes a woman's butt as he passes around the Gold Saucer. And there are many other examples of very blatant sexual themes littered around the game if you look closely.

For the OP, I can only give you my advice on how to approach FFXIV and your daughter. Early teens is an age range where kids start becoming very aware of many things they they likely will not talk about with their parents because it's quite frankly embarrassing even if they have a healthy amount of communication with their parents. Even as a young adult, I still have no interest in talking about my personal and intimate life with my mom, and I have a really great relationship with her free of any judgements. It's just not something that makes me comfortable. My best advice is to just be transparent with her about things. If she's playing the game actively or involved in any online environment, the reality is she's going to encounter discussions like that. You just can't police all of online discussion. It isn't possible to do. The best thing you can do is remind her that there are people who don't realize they might be talking to a girl her age, that there are people who very openly discuss sexual themes with others online, and talk about ways to walk away from those situations.
