Just stay away from the mess that was the FFXI wedding system.

On a personal note: In MMO games "Marriage" is really meaningless term.... It's not about starting a family/procreation or even sexual unity... so it's really just what... 'exclusive friendship'? BFF certificate? A way to give someone access to your stuff? (could just share login/pass for that)

So why have them? To celebrate your official bonding with a friend? That's fine, you can do that now without the devs wasting time building a system around it. If the game doesn't have a script running that gives your BBF party a thumbs up, then you are lacking something?? I find it hard to believe that one's emotional well-being is really dependent on a stamp of approval from an AI system, but if so, that person may have some RL issues they need to address.

TL : DR? A MMO "marriage" system is functionally useless and not worthy of serious attention. To the degree that it IS taken seriously, it becomes rather creepy/pathetic.
Ouch, that's a little harsh don't you think?

In game marriage is more of a bit of a social experience than anything else. In some games you can get exclusive fashion/vanity outfits and in others people actually get a small boost from being married.

Some people find it fun and that's what it's all about. That's your functionality.
You may not find something like this fun and therefore it is useless to you but that type of one sided thinking is what will hold this game back. You can't make everyone happy because some people will always find something to be useless and unnecessary while others will find it to be quite the opposite of useless.
