You can't apply real laws in a video game, but you can apply rules and regulations set by the country you're doing business with. If that country has certain rules against x, guess what your responsibility is?

It's how the real world works, even for entertainment. Did you really think developers just simply don't do certain things because they didn't think of it?

You can't apply real world marriage laws to a virtual marriage that is not legal.

I'd agree with others in this thread that they should simply not make any of it gender specific. Neglecting to restrict it isn't the same as supporting it so I think SE could get away with it.
You may not apply real laws to something fake but the video game itself is not fake. It is a real product based in Japan and servers are in Japan and as we was talking about before they are more against homosexual marriages than they are for it. Certain rules still apply and it may be against those rules for them to implement something like that in their game and give support to it. As I said this may or may not be the case I am speculating based on other facts and very real possibilities.

Though the loophole to that would be as simple as I have said before. Give us the means to make weddings happen, clothes, rings, bells and the whistles. Then let the player control it without them interfering.

Again I reiterate is they may possibly have some type of legal reasons they are not allowed to push same sex marriages in their games, whether you think it is fair or not. This may or may not be the case because I am speculating due to related facts from multiple sources. I may be wrong and it may be something as simple as they don't agree with your out look on it and have put their foot down to it. Though unless otherwise specified I cannot say that is the case either.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing that any sort of japanese marriage law would affect this in any way. I don't think there are any western countries, regardless of their laws, where two people couldn't just declare that they were married without actually being legally married. If I told my girlfriend right now "lol we're married", and she says "yes now we are!" we would be exactly the same amount of legally married as we would be in FF14, regardless of SE sanctioning it or not.

Imagine if you were playing a game of dungeons and dragons, and the game master allowed your male character to marry another male character, do you think that is in any way illegal in any of the western countries where gay marriage is illegal? This is essentially the same as being married in FF14. It's one gigantic role playing game and SE is our game master.

The only thing really stopping them is potential negative reactions from society.

If they do have an in-game mechanic for marriage, and they allow same sex couples to take part, then I'd be over the moon. One of the things that irks me about Japanese culture is the fact that they seem to ignore LGBT rights for the most part, especially when it comes to marriage. (Fortunately, the Japanese aren't backwards enough to have widespread discrimination on this front, so it could really be a lot worse.) This is why I don't hold much hope for gay marriage in FFXIV.

What I imagine they'll end up doing is just leaving the cathedral open for anyone to do any kind of ceremony for whatever reason. This allows people to be able to orchestrate their own gay marriages, and it would free Squeenix from any (albeit unjustified) repercussions they might face for officially sanctioning gay marriages. From a business standpoint, it's a win-win that has almost no risk, and you can almost always trust a business like Squeenix to go with the less risky solution.

You know I was just thinking I know link pearls are a dime a dozen but even for the marriage they can give you a specially made key item link pearl in or something like that that Pulses when your significant other comes online. It might just be a stab in the dark but I was just thinking about that.

Honestly no one group of people is going to agree on how to handle this sensitive topic, that being the case we shouldn't receive in game "marriage" at all.

I just don't see how it would be possible.

Edit: I like the idea of the player dictating the culture.

If they just put stuff in there for "marriages" (ie gowns, suits, rings, empty gathering halls, etc..) and let players do what they want with it, that's the best way to handle it. The game shouldn't have any official recognition of marriage, and it shouldn't provide any benefit in-game either.

After all, MMO "marriage" is silly when you think about it... its just a BFF ceremony with some window dressing.

Some people in MMO's develop lasting and worthwhile relationships by having a pleasant demeanor... *cough cough*

Those people like to have imaginary weddings in their imaginary video games. They don't take everything in the video game so seriously.

If we can have our weddings, we will all be more than happy to ask for a "15 cats" feature for you.
