Thanks all I tried the Microsoft one first, but it required two steps: Fingerprint, then tap the ffxiv token entry.
The fingerprint was redundant, since I use one to get into the phone, and the extra tap after that was as unnecessary as door opening confirmation dialogs in game

Tried the Google Authenticator. Much faster. Open, and the number is right there. Only downside is that you only have 30 seconds per number. I could swear the SQEX one gave me a full minute.

One odd thing is that the apps themselves wouldn't read the QR code on my Samsung S24. They show the camera view with alignment frame, but did nothing, and had no capture buttons I had to use the phone's camera app, which then prompted me for which authenticatorr I wanted to use the capture.
If you keep a shortcut to the game on your Windows desktop, it's a handy place to hide the emergency removal code. Right click the shortcut, select properties, and paste it into the comment line. When I copied it from the SQEX page, it came with a couple embedded carriage returns that prevented the paste, so I had to paste it into a text editor and re-clip just the code.
