And the GCBTW is a meme and so theres hint of truth to it, but you know well an MMO has a ton of different people and just like most of XIV isn't a GCBTW member generally XI wasn't without it's huge amount of helpful people either. You are always bound to run into some bad apples and then people stereotype the heck out of the game.

It didn't immediately die because it had a group that loved it, but it never really grew, likely because of the way the game functions. Unless you know people or have a group to play with, you can't get anywhere. I couldn't find a group to play with. I'm not saying I only played the game for 2 weeks. I spent 2 weeks specifically in the dunes trying. I played for more than those 2 weeks, trying to figure the game out and how to play.

I'm not trying to say XI is a bad game. But a lot of people talk up the community as always helpful and everyone who needs anything has people jumping to help, and that was not my experience. The game is touted as one that relies on a community to make any progression, but the downside to this is of you aren't on the in with that community, you have the experience I did.

I agree with some of your points here, except the one of growth. Clearly it grew enough to be so damn profitable XIV couldn't take the crown until 2021.

"At a recent media event where members of the press and influencer community got to go hands-on with the new Endwalker expansion (check our preview here), Final Fantasy XIV producer and director, Naoki Yoshida revealed some pretty big news. Final Fantasy XIV has officially become the most profitable title in series history, finally taking the mantle from its older brother and fellow MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI."

My guess is they are talking about total profits, not yearly ones. It would definitely take XIV a while to become more profitable than XI, considering 1.0 almost bankrupted the company. It had to work through that mess first to become profitable, before it could work on taking that from XI.

As for the growth comment, I think XI peaked at 500000 subs, and we don't know for XIV because companies have stopped reporting that. It was sustainable, as evidenced by its continued support, but it's also a mainline final fantasy title, and we know how they feel about letting one of those be seen as failed (just look at XIV for that)

If it did that would've been an insane growth achievement. People needed the game and an additional modem and hard drive to even play the game. Dial up was still around in some places and the internet as a whole wasn't a necessity like it is today. Smartphones weren't even a big thing. So comparing it to a modern day MMO isn't really applicable.

Anyways, nothing we've discussed here has pointed to the game being anything other than a resounding success with a few people who didn't like it. It seems to me it's good remake material. If they've remastered other FFs surely its previously most profitable one also deserves to be remastered. That's all I'm gonna say.

Ever quest peaked at abiut the same numbers, and ever quest 2 is still going also.

Wow came out shortly after XI did and we know how that story goes.

I don't know that I agree with you on only a few people not liking XI, but I won't argue it's success.

I do really wonder how many people who think they want xi but shiny actually want like, the "good era" of XI but shiny.

Times have changed a lot and most of those people are my age or older now. And I'm not exactly young anymore.

Always bugs me when people say XI wasn’t that big due to only half a million subscribers, I still remember having to use dial up to play when it launched, as you correctly pointed out, EQ2 is still going strong
For it’s time XI was incredibly successful, sure in the modern age it is dated, especially the things like randomly speaking to NPCs and hope they have a quest, rather than a marker, but I use to spend hours in some zones just taking in the scenery

If there was a demand for it then, I feel there would be a demand for it now. Sure some of us may not have the time (even myself, I mean I have work and family) to prog it every day but there are A LOT of people who do. Labor force participation is shrinking meaning more people don't work and get sustained by someone else, there are still plenty of kids and college students that don't do anything during the summer and for people like us we would just go slower. The disabled would have an easier time playing something like that than say.... IDK trying to clear a savage or ult where the pacing means you're always moving and pressing buttons really quickly.

I just feel a well executed, modernized version of a progression focused and slow paced MMO would find the same crowd of fans it did back then when the gamer pool was a lot smaller and had more challenges.

Given that no company wants to gamble though, I feel remaking XI with XIVs Engine and seeing how that venture goes would be a great way to save costs and try it out. Especially with the graphics update is receiving in 7.0. I mean XI fans would be over the moon with a nicer looking version of their MMO.

Or unreal, since they're using that over at CBU1, which ever proves economical and more upgradeable in the long run.
