It's clear as early as that one airship flashback with Cid tbh. Because it doesn't matter whether you were there or not, he always sees you and then even says "it was you wasn't it" later.Near as I can tell, the writers eventually just threw up their hands and said that your character is 1.x's WoL, whether you played 1.x or not - probably because, having shut down more than a decade ago, fewer and fewer players are around who were there. The most recent specific example I can come up with was running a level 50 quest starting in Ul'dah where you are helping someone write a bio on Louisoix. It definitely was added fairly recently, since besides the fact that I hadn't done it yet, the reward is adventurer plate materials. And you get explicitly called the Warrior of Light by one of the NPCs you interview, in the context of 'people who were there'. (I think his line, paraphrased, was 'I'm surprised you're interviewing me, instead of telling him yourself.')
