Look I understand you didn't click with the game. Claiming that it was a "bad game" just because you personally had a few weeks of bad luck is one thing, but trying to claim that FFXI is a "failed game" that was somehow kept alive for 20 years by a handful of stubborn holdouts is just beyond asinine
Now keep in mind that this was while competing with WoW and several other MMOs at the top of their game and the peak of the industry competition, as well as the market itself being much smaller, so less players overall to go around and many more quality games for them to choose from. Right now XIV only has a severely damaged WoW and nothing else current for MMO players to choose from. There were between 200,000 and 300,000 active players daily in 2006.[118] As of August 2006, the Xbox 360 version was the sixth most played game on Xbox Live.[119] As of 2008, the game had 500,000 subscribers.[120] By June 2012, Final Fantasy XI became the most profitable title in the Final Fantasy series.[64] While many MMOs have switched to some form of free-to-play model, the base monthly subscription price point for Final Fantasy XI has remained the same at $11.95 since its debut in 2002
