    A few concerns about Pictomancer

    I really like the concept of painting through aether magic. I think it has great potential. I'm happy for everyone who's excited to play the class as well.

    I did have some concerns after watching the trailer for it and although I doubt much can be done to fix any of these by launch, I thought I'd post about them anyway to get others' thoughts and discuss it.

    1) The neon is overkill - Remember when you changed the design of the Sage icon because of the concern from people who have a fear of things with small holes in them (I forget the name). I feel like a much larger number of people are going to have a visceral reaction to these bright, garish colors and goofy effects.

    I get it, you guys just came off the Fall Guys crossover and that was bright and bouncy and lighthearted but there's a place for that sort of thing in game (like the Moogle and Sabotender weapons and mounts or people in frog suits) without it being too much. When you wrap the whole class in that aesthetic it's like being forced to watch Caillou 24 hours a day on repeat. If nothing else, can we (on the client side) tone down the colors a little?

    It's going to affect caster gear in a negative way - You know how so much of the aiming gear is tailored toward Bard? You rarely see a dungeon drop that's machinist-themed or dancer-themed. It's always floofy pants or billowy shirts or feathered hats. Caster gear is going to go from robes to mismatched pajama sets (not that we don't already have those in game though...)

    You already do really cool brush effects with the Byakko weapons - What happened to that? Those blend in well without being garish. I'm feeling like someone took a look at the Fall Guys assets and went "Wait... what if we shaved months off development time by reusing these??"

    I have a feeling Pictomancer is going to go through a Machinist rebirth where it gets completely overhauled a couple times until it finds its place. And please for the love of Hydaelyn, cool it on the splurpy sound effects.

    With what certainty do you claim that casting gear will be all about pictomancer aesthetic? Has healer gear been majorly about sage aesthetic in endwalker? Even your own example speaks against you because both mch and dnc released after brd.

    I totally agree that the colors and cartoony nature of what we have been shown is a total shut down for me when it comes to the class. If the brush strokes were toned down and not so cartoonish it would be so much better. As it is now it reminds me of bad 60s kids shows.

    Looks like one of those jobs that'll be extremely popular with the casual folks who'll need to take a break from standing around in Limsa to run a dungeon or alliance raid to feel cute while playing.

    I can't see anyone taking it to savage/ultimate progs cause watching those animations over and over will get very old, very quick.

    I don't mind the cell-shaded aesthetic in general, but it's jarring in this context. When I think of something like Okami, Wind Waker, Killer7, etc I enjoyed the stylized approach. But in this instance, it looks very much out of place within the game's own style.

    I'll reserve my judgment for when we get the job actions trailer or at full release, but I felt a little disappointed from the trailer and what we've seen so far. I would just prefer to not have every fight turn into cutesy "Good King Moggle Mog's Splatoon Party".

    I agree with you on the neon part, but I don’t think it’s going to change Casting gear much at all… most Aiming stuff seems to fit MCH best, very cowboy-looking. There’s very little of it I actually like on my DNC, to this day. And lately my DNC would much rather like to raid Scouting’s closet! Even my Bard is usually wearing their own AF because so much of Aiming just looks wrong on them. So I doubt Casting is going to get many gear sets that cater to Pictomancer… although it would be nice in some respects! Anything Casting that isn’t robes seems to be plate mail these days… they just need to unrestrict glamour already!

    I'm gonna play the devil's advocate here and say that dooming the job with "no one will do savage with it" is just not proper feedback. The job isn't even out yet, let alone a proper trailer that showcases most of it. People were dooming SCH with SGE release and yet SCH is still taken more for raiding than SGE; I'm not saying SGE isn't good for raiding, but the game is intended for all jobs to clear all types of content, that includes savage and ultimates. Pictomancer isn't going to be any different.
