They think they're short because they overlook the cartoonish overall art style of FFIX. Freya is actually 6'1" tall making her 1 inch shorter than Steiner. Amarant however could be considered a giant among men standing at 7'4"
I think I'd rather see something draconic given that the populace has been living alongside Tiamat's brood for centuries.
We've already seen a smaller scale example of how quickly they can adapt to better live alongside man with Ehli Tou, so seeing that taken to a logical extreme could be interesting.

They could do a split between Burmecia and Cleyra as subtypes.
The important part is to get Freya's stepdance right.

The same argument could be made about Miqo'te and Hrothgar as two different feline type races. We already have a humanoid rat-like race in the game (and they're from another FF game to boot!) - FFXI's qiqirn.
Alas, they're considered beastmen (and some are downright barbaric, who eat hyur), so I doubt very much we'll see anything like that as a playable race in the game.
Personally, I would love to see burmecians as a playable race. I imagine the devs would do some simplifications modeling them; after all, technically, Viera are supposed to be digitigrade, but they still use all the same boot models as everyone else. They wouldn't be short either - Freya was 6'1". That said, if we *ever* get another playable race, I would be surprised if it comes before 9.0.

I think before considering adding more races, they should really expand the character customization of all our current races, as well as sorting out the whole rigmarole with Viera and Hrothgar headwear. I think 9.0 should be the earliest to consider any new races.
That being said, if they were to ever do one more race, I do think Burmecians would add the most from a variety standpoint if we're going solely by FF-inspired races. A more lithe alternative for a beast race, and I'd imagine they'd be somewhere around or under female Au'ra sizewise. The only thing I'd really be iffed about is if they didn't keep the digitigrade feet, but it's also understandable why due to limitations on dev time. Even if they don't end up playable, I'd still love to see them in the game down the line. I think Burmecia would also be a good inspiration for a zone, especially a shard veering towards a water-aspected calamity. And if they wanted to get even more inspired, I think memories would be a good concept to explore for an expansion's theming.
Also if they put Freya's hat in the game I'd be a very happy Dragoon thank you. There are like no Dragoon hats haha.
I feel as though Burmecians have to be added in at some point just due to their status among FF fans, and I earnestly hope that if they do, they're as a playable race. They have such a unique silhouette compared to every other race we have available, with a far more bestial appearance. While the snout of a face and the digitigrade feet could be an issue, I feel confident that they are things that could be solved, and hopefully not in the way of the fake sort of digitigrade the Viera have. If it's a matter of them not getting to wear shoes, so be it! Any sort of further distinction between the races at this point would be great, and, again, Burmecians have just a shape to them that isn't matched by any other player option available.
They would be the only race I'd ever consider changing to.
