I think that is mostly an ARR thing over all. There is almost no diversity in how npcs look even by the time the Domans come into the story. For instance a lot of the earlier depictions of Ala Mhigans are Hylander Hyurs wearing the Hempen Camise/Undershirt depending on the npc's gender. That being one of the times they use that top to mean oh this person is a refugee and thus poor. Look at them they're only wearing bits of leather held together via cords. Or they are a miner or some kind of day laborer. Not that I understand why they chose to show this person who works in the hot sun all day or in a mine should be wearing something that shows off so much skin. Heck even combatants that fight in the blood sands tend to wear those tops and I'm just going but why? I wouldn't want to end up taking a dive and having the sand in the arena scaping layers of skin off.

Depending on how this game handles NPCs, it could either be actually really quite simple or an absolute nightmare to do this.

If NPCs are handled like Players in that they have a database of NPCs with set racial settings, outfits etc and said NPC is spawned using predetermined parameters from that DB then it's as simple as updating that DB and we're off to the races.

Honestly though, I doubt that's the case, likely NPCs are just raw entities that the development tools allow them to paste their predefined appearance and name over and as such have no relation to their other appearances beyond simply sharing a name and look. This means that an NPC that spans multiple states and instances within an area would likely need to have all of it's variants adjusted.

Those NPCs that have random flavour speech bubbles or dialogue through various stages of quests? I'd be willing to bet that each unique piece of text requires a unique instance of said NPC.

That's a *LOT* of work as well as a ton of QA to catch the inevitable mistakes and errors that would slip though.

This is one for SE's future love affair with AI

Oh I'm sure it could be fairly easy or as complicated as how they coded the way zones deal with music in why currently we aren't able to have a portable orchestrion. That even though I enjoy the game this is one of the various minuscule things that have bugged me over the years of playing it. Same thing with how if you change the exterior of your house it doesn't give you the matching interior. I'm talking about the pillars, baseboards and crown molding on the inside. That is when not using one of the house glamors that actually do change many of these things. I'm just glad they are still working on trying to give us the ability to remove said pillars. I just wish we would be updated more often. Yet I would probably just be slightly disappointed if they didn't do this for whenever it comes time to actually put this game into maintenence mode. Course this is even lower on my own list than say cleaning up at least the 2.3 Ascian meeting scene if not fixing other early Ascian scenes that still don't jive with what we get later on. Or how with each expansion they don't pile on all the skills and abilities into the later levels. Let alone stop having jobs (mostly dps) not having an aoe skill by the time you hit Brayflox.

Wouldnt it be nice if instead of all the modern garbage, we got more in universe casual glams that NPCs from various locales could be seen wearing? Fuck all the ball caps, give me more bonnets.

Alternatively they could update all the old DoL/DoH gear to have more unique models and variations.
