So long as it is not as good as crafted, I would be ok with an alternative. This is one of the few games where crafting is relevant at the start of each tier because it is better than even the previous savage tier.

The game previously had these, and I can't remember the last time (talking years) where any route other then quickest one through the dungeon was run. Even sprouts (and I seem to get them a ton) would just go the fastest route. Not sure after the first time that you would see people going outside the optimal route.

It was isolating by design. It has been said that DT is supposed to be more group oriented, but let us be real and see that when you are doing relevant content during the expansion, things are easier for the larger scale. However, I think it is pretty fair to say trying to do SB and StB relics are harder now then when they were relevant. If after an expansion is over they can be done with tomes, I could get on board.
