    Black screen when exiting game

    Just recently I installed FFXIV on my new computer that I just built, had to install Windows 11 instead of 10 and the game runs normal so far but whenever I exit the game, the screen stays black and I have to close the game via the Task Manager.

    Even if I start the game, then exit it, it will still hang on the black screen. I have tried reinstalling the game, and uninstalling Logitech Gaming Software but it still does it and I have no idea what else could be doing it. This is a fresh install of FFXIV and also of Windows 11.

    Is there a way to see why it is hanging on the black screen instead of closing down like it used too?

    - Are you running any addition programs alongside Final Fantasy XIV? (e.g. Nvidia Control Panel, AMD etc.)
    - Does this black screen on exit occur on more than one character?
    - Has this been a long on-going issue or has this only been occurring very recently:
    - Are you running any addition programs alongside Final Fantasy XIV?
    - As you mention this is a new install of Windows 11, were any optional system updates installed as well and are graphic drivers full up-to-date?
    - Does this black screen on exit occur if the game is run in different resolution settings such as full screen mode, windowed borderless or windowed mode?
    - Are there any error messages upon exiting:

    Could we also request for a system report? This can be generated by opening the launcher and going to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display and then copy and paste all the details into a response here.

    I'm having the same issue, it only started happening recently. I do have NVIDIA control panel open, as well as Discord & Steam and the software for my keyboard Steelseries Engine.
    I only have one character I play so have not tested on other characters
    My install of Windows 11 is also relatively new, all graphics drivers up to date, and i'm on the stable 23H2 build with all optional updates installed.
    I have it on borderless windowed mode, there's no error message on exiting, for me the black screen will self-quit after a few seconds if i click on it, but if I never interact with it it'll stay black screen forever, I assume it's crashing out once I click on the black screen, and this black screen only happens once exiting the game, never during actual gameplay.
    My gameplay sessions are usually 8+ hours long, I saw someone else say that this occurs when they play for longer than 2 hours but if they quit within the first couple of hours it's fine.

    -Yea, I have several programs running along side the game but not sure what all is running besides Nvidia Control Panel, Logitech Gaming Software, Steel Series GG, might be more but most of this stuff I also ran when I had game running before, only difference is Windows 11, and new motherboard.

    -The black screen happen whenever I exit the game, either by logging in then exiting the game, or even when I just get to the main menu and then exit game.

    -This has only started recently after building new computer and installed Windows 11

    -Yes, but they hadn't been they have not been a problem before, already tried disable Logitech Gaming Software since I heard that could be it, but it was not.

    -I didn't see optional system updates when I installed Windows 11, It also took several days for me to activate my windows 11 to install rest of updates.

    -I have tested each resolution settings and each one still gets a black screen on exit.

    -There are no errors, it just goes to a black screen and I have to close it with task manager. On several occasions, I would get a black screen on load but that is easily fixed by deleting the FFXIV_BOOT.cfg but it somehow keeps happening every now and then.

    still getting black screen

    I'm still having this issue and I have tried several things like uninstalled MSI Center, Logitech Gaming Software and Steelseries but it still hang on exit.

    Another issue I have noticed is that every now and then when I boot up FFXIV, I would also get a black screen and would have to use Task Manager to close the game but then when I launch the game again, It would load and I can then log into the game.


    I have no idea what else to do except having to reinstall Windows 11, but not sure since everything else works just fine. Not sure if it it would work, but I could also try closing random things in the Task Manager since something is affecting FFXIV on the random black screens on start-up, and the black screen on exit.

    Edit: I have just tried disabling all non-Microsoft services, and all start-ups except Steam since its needed, and I still get the black screen. Is there a program for Windows 11 that you could run, that would tell you what is keeping a program from closing?

    Good morning! Thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

    Please try the following:
    - Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card and sound drivers (if applicable). After reviewing the systems report, it appears that your GPU [GeForce RTX 4070] was last updated on [12/5/2023]. At this time, a newer version should be available please try updating the driver to see if it helps with the issue.

    - Please try lowering the resolution.
    - Please try running the game as an administrator.
    - Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything.
    - Please be sure that Final Fantasy XIV is installed to the C: Drive. (If Steam version, make sure both the game and Steam are installed on same drive)
    - Please be sure to disable or remove any overlays (Discord, Steam, NVIDIA etc.) as they may interfere with startup.
    - Make sure that the Windows OS is fully updated.
    - Verify installation files (Steam)
    - Reinstall game (If steam version, try uninstalling and reinstalling both the game and Steam)

    Well, I think I got rid of the black screen by deleting "steam_api64.dll" in the FFXIV\boot folder. The game was able to load and quit this time after without getting stuck in a black screen. At first I was renaming the SteamClient64.dll from my Steam folder, which worked just as well but would get downloaded again whenever Steam restarts.

    I am unsure on what steam_api64.dll does but it was causing me problems so I'll probably have to delete it every time it gets downloaded, hoping it doesn't cause any problems.

    Only time will tell if this truly was the problem.

    steam_api64.dll is part of the steam client and manages api connections with Steam for things like authentication, game updates and cloud storage. Weird that removing that solves the issue - I wonder if it's trying to update something on Steam and is unable to do so (i.e. that file becomes locked by a process).

    Do you have anti-virus software running on your computer? If so it may be worth excluding the FF folders/Steam folders as it could be this locking a file and preventing it from exiting properly.

    It's also worth disabling any overlays (where possible) you may have active (steam, nvidia, etc) as these can also cause issues.

    I have Windows Security that came with Windows 11, and I have placed the ffxiv folder in exclusions section and I still get black screen on exit with the the steam_api64.dll in place but once removed, the game would load and exit fine. Nvidia's and Steelseries Overlay are disabled,
    and I have been using Steam Overlay but tried it disable but it changed nothing. I have no idea what the steam_api64.dll is linked too that is causing this issue but I have read about other posts of this problem and seems I'll just have to change the file name of steam_api64.dll after
    every update or major update until it either works itself out or I get lucky and sometime happens that fixes this issue.

    The game is still playable and this issue is little annoying as I am worried the problem would resurface and every time I go to load or exit the game, I would get a black screen.
