Housing Utility and QoL Function: The Bedroom

Hello everyone! My name is Eden Elsewhere, and I have a Quality of Life idea for Housing/Apartments to bring them them to life and put more utility behind them.

I would like to introduce the idea of The Bedroom.

“What is the bedroom?” You may ask.

I will explain how it works!

The bedroom will be an instanced area, very much like the Island Sanctuary. There will be a bed where you can log out/in for the cutscene. There will also be a glamour dresser and armoire, where you can glamour yourself. The size of this room will likely be smaller than an apartment, with predetermined places for furniture (or predetermined furniture dependent on which region the bedroom is). The walls and carpet would be customizeable as well. There may be other items, maybe anything you could find in an inn room.

The main point of the bedroom is too give the housing more utility, and give the players more of a home feeling to well, their homes.

But let’s address some of the problems that people may already be recognizing.

Where would the bedroom be located?

For houses, I imagine the door to the bedroom would be in the same location as the FC Apartments/Workshop door.

In Apartments, that may be more tricky.

Since everyone has different decoration preferences, a door that can be moved would be best. But it will likely be a stationary door. Presumably because of coding issues.

Or bedrooms could be a housing only utility, but I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

Will there be a singular instance or will there be a separate bedroom for a house, a FC apartment, and a regular apartment?

In my personal opinion, a singular instance shared between all your spaces would just be the best option for the playerbase, and also server load. It also helps avoids the problems that would come from shared housing.

How would the logging in/out animations be handled on certain beds?

I imagine that for a bit there would only be the choice of certain bed available and then more would be added as they either create more animations, or jerryrig the old animation to work on strangely shaped beds.

What if your house gets auto-demolished while you are logged out in the bedroom?

Either you log back into the bedroom, and when you exit it, you are spat out in your apartment or outside where your house used to be. Or your log in and are just spat out next to where your house was.

That’s all I can think of for the moment. I imagine the bedroom would start out as more “function over form” with more customization added as the years go on, with only the glamour dresser and bed being the only objects you cannot move.

If anyone has any questions I’ll be happy to answer them! Let’s see if we can get some devs to look at this!

I like this idea, only I’d like to have a lot of customization to it. Seems just like an inn room that you can access from your house, which would be great for adding glam dressers to housing if they could pull it off. There was some reason they couldn’t add glam dressers as a stand-alone item, so maybe this could be a sort of bypass to the issue.

I’d really like to be able to add an FC-like room to my house to use as a bedroom, but I’d want to be able to decorate it like an FC room too! lol So if we had something like this, I probably wouldn’t consider it my bedroom if I can’t decorate it. Maybe stick a glam dresser, armoire and an aesthetician bell in there and call it the dressing room?

I'd be down for that idea as well. I think there could be a lot of customization. It's just that beds have to be in a specific space because of how the cutscene works (all beds are in the northeast corner of the room), so I think if everyone could get used to that, I think it could be something easily added, and gets all the stuff that we should have in housing.

I'd rather not be forced into a specific layout or look. I don't mind SE adding it as an option for those who might want it but I'd rather have an additional empty room over attaching what's effectively an inn room to my house.

That's the entire point though. To put the glamour dresser and being able to log in and out in one's own home. It's about function not form. One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is that housing is basically just for glam and doesn't even feel like home. The fact we have to go to an inn to get the cute logout/in scene and for glamour dresser is very silly, and this is an answer to that.

I like the idea tbh. +1 from me.

Excellent idea, saves a lot of item slots spent designing a bedroom in the main space, too. If customization is difficult to implement, perhaps the general atmosphere of the room changes depending on the kind of exterior walls you used?

Ooohh I have never thought of that but that would be an interesting implementation. Plus it would give another interesting use for exteriors.

While I’d still want to be able to customize it, if I could have that window seat back wall from the Roost (and actually be able to sit on it!) I’d love it! Shame we still don’t have that as an in-game furnishing… or the narrow lantern pillars!
