After your first gil cap you realize its the most useless currency in MMO history, after 3 gil caps you just look for ways to get rid of it, mostly throwing away gifting gil mounts, don't go down that path.

Reach cap? How long does it take to reach cap? I've been trying to reach cap for 4 years. Why do you act like reaching cap is so easy. 3 gil caps? is that 3 billion? omg

It, really really depends
You can have some hidden markets, you can get some ultra rare drops, do external services like say, gpose requests or run a thing/work on venues(These generate A LOT if well made) roleplaying and SPECIALLY ERP
Along just comes the enough time to amass
But I agree once reached a certain point gil becomes pretty much useless, I'm sitting at 250M and even I know I won't use more than say, 50 mil on the next 2 years unless I play dumb or go crazy buying mounts I'm too lazy to get(AKA criterion)
I've never tracked how long it takes to reach a gil cap but I know I made around 500mil in a week once.
Just log in as soon as the servers come up after a patch and mass craft new stuff all day, sell everything you loot from new content, don't keep anything, it will be worth nothing in a week, gotta stay ahead of the gil making pack.
I've probably made 1 gil cap solely on the expert crafts used for island stuff since that was first introduced.
Sub parts always sell well, sniping dirt cheap combat materia in preparation for combat craft set patches, pentamelded sets are immune to undercuts, abuse anything that punishes lazy people, abuse dumb undercutters and do smart undercutting, always prepping for a patch is a no brainer.
Then to go sleep and wait for next patch because almost everything gets hyper saturated by week 2.

"We scoured the universe, seeking out new civilizations in a quest to find meaning in life. One race valued wealth above all things. They believed gil was equal to happiness. But when they acquired all the gil, and there was nothing left to buy, happiness disappeared. Their wealth had no meaning, and so too did their lives."

sounds like a good time to me, and a bad time to others..,
even if I was to gift to people who only care for their own gains.
They are always in an struggle to avoid the ball crushing them with the reality of the lessened value they gave their own experiences and living.
While those who are only thankful for a gift, and those who feel joy in giving/aiding others will get to feel minor joy in just giving.
in the end, all that matters if you enjoy it, and don't let it become something dark.
[or expect it to replace things you actually need]

I agree. I love both, making lots of gil, and i enjoy giving it to someone I feel will appreciate it. It's good Karmasounds like a good time to me, and a bad time to others..,

Gil doesn't really account for a whole lot in FFXIV. I'm not even sure if there are any achievements tied to making X amount of it. Gil, just like actual RL money, lacks substance. Your list of achievements and titles is really what measures your progress and leaves your footprints in the cement during your time playing FFXIV. There are also untradeable/unsellable acquisitions that contribute to this as well.
If there is anything that currently gives me a rush and a huge dopamine hit, it's winning a Fall Guys match.

Rookie numbers, try ignoring them for a week and coming back to 50 mil or gambling and making 500m in an hour.
For real though, the shiny feeling wears off once you hit gil cap and have bought the majority of the MB. Now I just feed it to sprouts lol.
