I don't disagree, though cheating using mods has been a problem for years and I doubt that the development team are going to do anything to stop it since a large portion of the game's community make use of mods rather openly if you check what comes up on Twitter when you search for FFXIV there.

It's become pretty brazen and too big a problem to address without snuffing out a major source of revenue. I'm sure Yoshi-P is well aware that many people playing FFXIV do not actually want to play the game without heavily altering it at this point.

At most there might be an official statement pushed out that urges people not to do it, amounting to the verbal equivalent of a slap on the wrist.

No need for plugins when just queueing when a new instance spawns gives you a solo lobby

Can we at least acknowledge that there's a huge difference between using an addon to change how your glam looks or add in a timer for your garden, versus allowing you to cheat at raids or a PvP event?

There is a huge difference but for SE it's the same thing.

For example there's a huge difference between naked mods and naked lalafell mods but for SE there is zero difference.

The community can't cherry pick what is and isn't okay when it's all equally covered against the ToS. Which is why we self police to mitigate the issues.

This is how they wanted to design this event, so there shouldn't be any surprise that people would want to try and game the system; considering how difficult this can actually be for 'most' people.

I don't condone people cheating, but in the case of this event I understand the impulse.
Ishgard Restoration had a similar problem with bots crafting their way to the top of the leaderboards.

No. Both are third-party tools and both are disallowed by the ToS.

I can believe that someone thinks mods like that are 'illegal'. I remember some people saying that using mods in Skyrim was cheating, even if the mods made the game significantly harder.

    People are weird.

I'm starting to wonder if this is one of the main reasons that MMOs are slowly dying in popularity.

Those who prefer to play by the rules are getting tired of playing games with cheaters and feeling pressured to cheat themselves because of the unfair advantages that cheating offers.

Cheaters getting tired of being harassed over cheating in "just a game" when they can go to a single player game and cheat as much as they want without comment.

Personally, I don't see the point of cheating because it's just an admission that you can't achieve things through your own efforts. I also rolleyes at those who use the "I just cheat through the boring parts" excuse. If it's boring, why are you even playing? Do things that aren't boring instead.

Most of all, I don't let the actions of cheaters bother me. Dumb people are going to do dumb things. No point in getting upset over it.

If that's a reason people are leaving the genre, it's probably one of the smaller ones. The major issue for most people, I think, is the insane time investment required to get to "the fun part of the game." Other MMOs try to remedy this and accidentally devalue the game's sense of accomplishment. It's a tricky issue to solve. XIV has like.... a 300 hour main story quest to chug through before you can start doing Expert roulette with your friends, and even though we all know Expert roulette SUCKS, it sucks even more to hear your friends ask "anyone wanna do expert??" and you can't join them because you're still in post-ARR. Ain't unique to XIV either. Black Desert's gotten better about helping people gear up, but eventually you do hit a wall where progression takes an eternity and if you want to be competitive you need to basically suck it up and grind a LOT to hit that endpoint.

Meanwhile, there's this endless slew of shallow mobile games that let you just jump in and have fun without wasting 300 hours of your life first, AND you can play them anywhere, anytime! To add to this, most MMOs that exist nowadays suck ass, and there aren't many more on the horizon because they're expensive to produce and perceived as a risky investment. I could go on but eh w/e. I agree with your final assessment in any case; since cbu3 won't bother curbing the cheating, all you can do is try not to let it bother you. Sure, you might want that title a lot, but just accept that if you didn't get it in the first week or so, you probably never will unless you actively cheat or become part of a slightly smaller problem by fishing for empty lobbies. At this point, anyone who earned the title legitimately should be livid, because the whole thing's a meme now and anyone with the title looks like a sad sad little dude who cheated at bloody fall guys of all things, lmao
