Telling you right now. Just skip the whole story and get the reader's digest version of it via youtube videos.

I feel youre the kind of person where the msq isnt what youre interested in and thats totally fine! Either buy the ARR-Shb story skip or log in to do a bit of story prog and focus on unlocking side content thats available to you atm.

People seem to forget that the story immersion and journey is an investment and if youre not sold or at the very least have a slight interest in it then you shouldnt force yourself into continuing to go through the story.

"Endgame stuff" comes at level 50 and every ten levels after that. Raiding "at level" can be fun ... especially if you can find a group that wants to play through those 8 and 24 person raids (Party Finder may be helpful). It's good practice for when you get higher level. There are two new jobs every ten levels as well, starting at the beginning of Stormblood.

Crafting is something you can do pretty much through the entire game, as is PvP and glamour. I'd honestly try gathering/crafting at-level while going through the MSQ. If you're good enough at it, there is a load of glamour items available from the Ishgardian Restoration quests/leveling as well as in the books you can purchase with white (and purple) crafting scrip you can get.

When leveling, you can skip the side quests (except for those with an [!], which can add even more things to do) or level up several jobs at once.

Also, don't treat this as a 4-hour per night "job". Play on the days when you don't have anything planned, when you feel like it. If there's any excitement in what you do, play. If you want to try other things, do not be anxious about missing out when you don't play. A good life balance involves friends and Real Life experiences in addition to playing the game. Your subscription is already less expensive than an evening at the movie theater each month. Don't force yourself to play because you are subscribed.

Consideration one: FFXIV isn't WoW. You need to shed any expectations you have for the game based on your WoW experience. (I came from WoW also, played both games in WoD and Legion but quit WoW at the end of Legion). Play the game for what it is, not what you think it should be.

Consideration two: the story here is important. Just about everything in the game revolves around it. Interest in the story isn't something you can force. Either you're willing to pay attention to it or you're not. While you may still enjoy some of the game play if you don't care about story, you'll get a lot more out of the game if you pay attention to what's going on storywise. If you're really not a story person, don't try to force yourself through it. Purchase a MSQ skip if not also a job potion.

Consideration three: if you're having problems staying interested in the existing jobs, I would lower expectations for what Viper will be like. It will likely end up the same as the existing melee DPS jobs - combo for single target, combo for AoE, building resources until you can use a big attack to spend those resources and start over. There's a lot more to a good job than a flashy name.

iv made it past HW to SB but had real life things go on and restarted the story and made it back to heavens ward and just lost interest
Experiencing games and art is very subjective, so take this all with a grain of salt.

If it's possible to play as your original character, I'd recommend doing that instead of restarting the story. ARR's story is passable but clunky and unfulfilling. HW is great in my opinion, but doing it a second time — including all of the fights, etc — would understandably be tedious. So if you still have your other character, I'd jump back on them. In any inn room, there is a book that will let you rewatch every cutscene you've already experienced, and that's how I would recommend catching up after a break.

Personal preference: try the Japanese voice-acting. I found it very hard to connect with characters when they spoke English because the voice-acting was so dry. The Japanese voice-acting feels like it has a lot more emotion, and it made a world of difference in helping the world feel like a more vibrant place.

Personal preference: Stormblood's story is bad. There's some fun gameplay and even the terrible story has a few nice moments, but overall be prepared to endure and just get through it. Your reward for this endurance will be Shadowbringers. Shadowbringers is a masterpiece. If Shadowbringers doesn't pull you in, it's likely that nothing will.

If you're looking for a more engaging class, my best recommendation would be Black Mage. All classes start out very simple, so especially if you're a WoW veteran, you're not going to be challenged or engaged by most of the classes when they're below 50. That said, Black Mage is easily the most complex class, and over time it accumulates a lot of different mechanics and timers and positioning to juggle, so that would be my recommendation of a class to try. I'll be genuinely surprised if you get to level 60 and still aren't feeling engaged!

Also, finding other people to play with or even just chat with while you all do different things can be a great boon to your experience. I have no helpful advice as to how to find people you personally will gel with, except that when you see them, grab on and don't let the opportunity slip to make a new friend!

    Best of luck to you!

If the story is not really holding your interest, just skip or skim-read the story (note: do not buy a level boost). For the jobs, just try each one, to see if any grab your interest, whether it's aesthetics or actual mechanics. Some of them will play a little differently, depending on which level range you are in. If a job doesnt grab you at level 30, it might grab you at 50. That may be a bit of personal perseverance though.

There may be a good reason to purchase a single job boost: you gain access to all the level 50+ starting jobs. It's a less expensive way of figuring out if Samurai/Astrologian/Dancer/Gunblade/Reaper/Sage could be the job you'd like to take up in-game. Less expensive in that you'd pick a job you don't find appealing (yet), boost it, and thus gain access to all of those other jobs without having to level through Stormblood/Shadowbringers first. Downside, of course, is that you still have to go through the MSQ.

Story boosts are another option. Boost <i don't care about it> job to 80. Start <level 50/60/70> job quest. Boost story to the same level as the new job. Shadowbringers was pretty fun as a Reaper when I did that on an alt.

Relive the glory days you skipped using NewGame+. There is no XP, but you get to experience all of the angst of HW, all of the frustration Zenos inspires in Stormblood, all of the questioning of morality in Shadowbringers in short chunks of story line. You can also relive job quests that way if you boost, say, Dark Knight to 80 and then relive the 50/60 storylines again.

I just dont think level boosts are a good idea, for new players, in understanding basic mechanics and gameplay (and I know this is also applicable to people who don't level boost, but still...). Maybe if you use it to unlock the job you want? Maybe?

Chill on the MSQ, do the Alliance Raids, Normal Raids, Ex Trials/Normal Trials etc. Farm some "Endgame" stuff and 100% level some alt jobs if you're not feeling your current main.

Sorry you're getting so much crap from people. There are a bunch of people who are burnt out and upset right now (they'll insist they aren't) and trying to be down on it and get everyone else to be.

So you got to SB before? Do you still have that character? You might consider hopping back on them and picking up now that you've had a refresher through HW. You can skim past cutscenes in the inn room (that "Unending Journal" thing you can interact with), or you can watch some story recaps. "Mad Because Small" does brief and humorous takes, but broke the story up by each expansion and, if you're into that kind of humor, can give you a quick and dirty recap.

What is it you're having difficulty with right now? Is the story just in a low spot (where in HW are you, if I may ask?), or is it the Job you're playing that you aren't sure you care for? If it's the latter, you can pick SAM and/or RDM up at level 50 (if you own SB, which I take it you do) or GNB and/or DNC at 60. Sometimes changing things up can help.

If you love PvP, you can actually level doing that, though that doesn't help you with the MSQ too much, I guess. And yeah, it's pretty fun if you like it.

I'd say the main objective is doing the MSQ, and when you feel you've had as much of that as you want at the moment, do whatever else is fun for you - Frontlines, roulettes, trying out new Jobs, whatever.

If you can describe your problem more, maybe I can offer more advice, but that's what I'd go with for starter.
