    Imagine...

Imagine if every MMO including FFXIV followed the example of Destiny 2 and WoW to announce the next three expansions ahead of time.

Let's say it's currently the end of ARR, and they announce Heavensward where you go to Ishgard and fight dragons, but they also announce Stormblood where you fight with the Garlean empire on an all-out war while going around the world, and then ending with "Then in Shadowbringer you travel to another dimension to save your timeline!"

Wouldn't that be quite fun to speculate about and chaotic?

Your timing after the Bungie news from last weeks is just awful.

It's because WoW has just announced its three next expansions, which reminded me of Destiny 2 when they announced their three next expansions by the time of the announcement (Which was... 4 years ago?), which sparked the thought of "What if FFXIV did the same?"

No idea, you'd have to pay me to try WoW. All I know is that Destiny 2 and Bungie are currently on fire, and the last thing SE needs right now is their house of cards to catch fire.

In short: It's a terrible idea.

I totally agree. The benefit of having one expansion announced rather than two or more is the ability to change the roadmap and promises made without raising an eyebrow or receiving a backlash from the community.

However, this thread is just a "What if" scenario and fun thought, or pondering. Not to be taken seriously at all because if SE did then that's quite a risky move

If they did, it would spoil some of the story ahead of time by making the conclusions obvious because of what comes next. Given WoW doesn't care about its story as much, they don't have to worry about it as much.

Actually, we sort of knew this already in ARR and Heavensward.

While going through ARR, Ishgard stuck out and it was so obvious you were going there. You also visited Little Ala Mhigo and learned about their troubles, so you knew you were going to Ala Mhigo. The Far East was discussed in ARR by Yugiri and in various sidequests. The First was discussed in Heavensward's patches. In fact, there are references to the events of Endwalker in a Heavensward cutscene.

So we had all the future expansions teased by the time of Heavensward and I knew we were going to visit them all at some point and in some order.

I expected the next expansion would be to Ishgard because it was announced, then Ala Mhigo and then I expected The First to happen around 10 years from Heavensward but it was a lot earlier than I expected.

So SE planted all these seeds back in ARR and Heavensward and acted on them. Now we had some similar seeds planted in the cutscene before The Dead Ends dungeon that SE has already acted on. You could argue SE sort of does it.

So people on the forums/discord/reddit could complain about three expansions that they haven't seen rather than just one?

    Sure!

Like to point out, with the WoW example, they haven't actually shown any details at all for 2 and 3, they just gave names. So the roadmap / features for those 2 is still very much changeable.

As an elf fan, it's enough to know that one of my favourite areas in the game is going to be relevant again in the future. It's a smart move, especially given how varied personal tastes and desires for the future of any given game happen to be.
