Well if you don't want to compare them, then don't compare them!I really dislike comparing it to FFXI,
Every time I hear FFXI nostalgia I get happier I never played the game! >:O *clutches Widargelt plushie and stomps off*

It would be a damned shame for them to kill off the main character of Limsa.
I do applaud you though, you remember more than most, and far more than me, I even did some research towards it, trying in vain to remember any.
I do also hope they don't kill off her, but there is one thing I do believe we need to see. We have seen the literary terms "call to adventure" with the reformation of the alliance, and the NPC's involved therein. We have yet to see the action on this. I remember in FFXI an airship fleet coming to engage in battle alongside me! I demand her on the deck of the armada charging into battle!
Game is 2 years old and had additional story added to it, it's not too early. This is why I hope they take the story setup back towards FFXI, that's why and how we remember our favorite NPCs from that game, you literally 'grow up' with them in terms of story.
You follow Prishe for example up until you learn more about who she is alonside learning more about what happened in that part of the world even in the past. With Lilisette and Lady Lilith/Cait Siths you learn a great deal as you adventure, hell you even have the most obligatory Final Fantasy storyline of them all in WoTG.

Nenekko from the Miner quest line. I love how she just wants to learn about something everyone wants to forget!
And Hildibrand, but only because he's so thug life, it's impossible to NOT love him.
It's not nostalgia though. You're comparing Two Final Fantasy Online titles. People compare shooters all the time, including shooters in the same series (Battlefield 3 was great, but Battlefield 2 had x,y,z that seemed quite a bit better!)
Never playing the game is exactly why you don't really understand the comparisons.

I apologize to this, However unlike any other game it draws similarities with FFXIV more than any other could. Mainly for it being a Final Fantasy. It has the characterization FFXIV deserves. The same that is missing from every MMO out there that I have played. Hence why I could not reference them, and referencing a single player game would be moot.

I also thought Nenekko (sp?) and her two brothers from the miner quests were rather memorable, both adorable and funny!
The Sultana of Ul'dah as well, but that is more for the SO CUTE factor. xD
I wouldn't say there are any NPC's that I am particularly attached to, though. I kinda wish path companions were more worth getting attached to, they seem quite forgettable and you hardly see them at all. A shame, as they had a lot of potential.
Similarities are fine, but no one talks about those, only the differences. And only negatively. FFXIV needs a makeover to be better on its own terms. It doesn't need a makeover to be more like its hot older sister.I apologize to this, However unlike any other game it draws similarities with FFXIV more than any other could. She's hot, but she's also OLDER. It's time to move on.

I agree, FFXI is outdated in many many aspects. However storytelling and characterization are 2 aspects that are timeless. A story from the dawn of time can hold true as well as any recent novel and captivate us in the same way. I'd agree that you're right if I was saying that FFXIV needs to have deleveling like FFXI did, because FFXI was such a cool game. I am however refering to timeless aspects that have been studied and researched, that can only enhance a players experience.Similarities are fine, but no one talks about those, only the differences. I could quote literary sources for good characterization, and you could make the same argument, see Hero's journey for everything you could know about the topic of seeing a characters development. FFXI however is a little more current and relevant to a modern gaming aesthetic of non character narrative based storytelling.
