Honestly, as someone who's been here since the closed alpha of 1.0 I have to say I'm having a hard time justifying a sub. What's there is high quality in terms of looking nice and being bug free but that's about it.

Content is too formulaic and what's new is disappointing like Island Sanctuary (Criterion being the exception somewhat). Then there is the whole triple dipping thing what with a sub, expansion cost AND a cash shop being there. I'm also not a fan of crossovers. Fall Guys can be as good as it wants to be, all I see is an IP that's being advertised to me. It's like FFXV's Cup Noodles but less egregious.

All you realistically do is watch cutscenes and fight brain-dead enemies with boring jobs (unless you raid, but that's a whole different can of worms I'm not opening lol). You could replicate that feeling by watching a YouTube video while occasionally pressing a butting on a controller.

So in conclusion, for me it's teetering on the edge of not being worth it. If I didn't socialise with others, occasionally raid or didn't have a house (nice one, YP) I'd take breaks more often.

If you account for inflation sub prices have gone down. It's the one price that hasn't changed in 20+ years.

Plus, you can just go to an entry sub or sub for multiple months to get a reduction too.

Your $60 paid for the expansion AND the patches in advance.

Your subscription gives you access to the currently released portion of what you paid for. That is all.

The games industry as a whole is rapidly approaching a massive crash. The mass layoffs are a bright flashing warning sign for that. I expect SE to make a lot of money from the online store via fantasia, skips and overpriced mounts/outfits so subprice could probably go down a bit with SE still making a profit but my hope for that actually happening is unsurprisingly low especially since they can always point to server upkeep. SE as a whole is not far behind the likes of actiblizz or EA in terms of greed if at all.

If anything, it's more likely to be passively keeping them from putting prices up than giving them a reason to actively lower it.

The only way this game can go to F2P its by deleting mods once for all and focus solely on Cash Shop items (they have been doing it for the last years).

Cash shop has rarely been enough to keep a F2P game afloat. Even Warframe and PoE, that are often regarded as the best F2P games in the industry, use FOMO tactics and heavy pay for convenience on their store. PoE gives the players limited inventory space in a game that requires loot hoarding to trade and progress through endgame, and Warframe not only grind-gates new characters, but also time gates them, as the crafting process can take literal days. Not to mention you also have to grind and trade for paid currency if you wanna buy more inventory slots, card slots, warframe slots, weapon slots... You get me.

This game is the cheapest of everything in existence (subscription model)
Any time I try any F2P game, I usually spend 1 year worth of subscription in a week because of all the BS progression in shop or no life it to get decent progression. For context I play Lost Ark on the side and avg spend $80-100 a week

When the Expansion model was brought around, subscriptions stayed as a buffer since expansions in MMOs are usually a year or two apart, and the subscription is what funds that development as the proceeds from the purchase of the game/expansion was just earning back what they spent and generating some profit.

I've never seen anything to indicate that CBU3 handles this philosophy differently however.
Read the terms of any MMO out there. You are paying a subscription to access the game, nothing else. This isn't specific to FFXIV, this has beent he standard for MMOs as far back (that I can remember) to Asheron's Call (the same time EverQuest originated). This is why some companies will compensate players with something if they have downtime that's outside of their normal maintenance and patch cycles, such as days' worth of downtime due to unforseen circumstances. Not all of them do it, and none of them have to (the terms cover it normally) but it's a nice gesture at times.

According to inflation we should be paying over $20 a month.
