Viper would of been better if it had a different name

Hoplophilliac, champion, sneaker, destreza, scout, dimachaerus, ninja turtle. It would probably be easier to suggest more names if I understood what it was meant to be, but I think like gubnreaker it’s not really going to seem coherent if you haven’t played ff the one with that guy in.

I prefer the name "Viper" instead of something generic as "Blademaster".

Blademaster/Swordmaster only refers to the mastery of sword, Viper has much more references and set better expectations.

In Final Fantasy jobs:
Viper refers to the 2 blades like the fang of a viper, a "viper" is also used to refer to someone who backstab. The animal also perfectly fits an assassin, fast paced job.
Just like how Dragoon is named Dragoon instead of spearmaster as it refers to a culture, a knight related to dragons be it hunting, riding or using their power.
Samurai is named Samurai instead of Swordmaster or "Japanese Swordsman" as it refers to the culture of Samurai.
Machinist isn't named "Gunner" or "Gunslinger" as it refers to the use of machines rather than the gun.

On the opposite, Fire Emblem swordmaster:
In the whole series, you have Stefan, Lucia Catherine, Rutger, Ryoma. Those characters have way different background and culture.
"Swordmaster" fits an Asian sword user as well a Western sword user. It would fit PLD or SAM if applied to FF.

The name of "Viper" gives far more information and set clear expectations on the job than "dude who's good with swords".

this are two different things, blademaster is not just a mastery of the sword , it has an actual meaning and applied to games , a blademaster is adept in ALL melee weapons ,think of Bloodborne main character the Hunter, he's an actual blademaster because is adept in several weapons.
as for swordmaster in this yes , just master of swords.

Not to mention, if they *really* wanted a name that coalesced "Thief" and "Ranger", as well as give people a clearer "Corsair" fantasy, "Hunter" would have been, imo, more appropriate. Because what follows from the name "Hunter" is a "Treasure Hunter", which would bring in a nice little bit of Locke Cole thievishness to round out the class, as well as better reflect the expac's "gold" theme.

Thing is, Zidane also said he was going to be a great treasure hunter. There's even Alleyway Jack who tells you his real name once you collect enough treasure chests.

Hunter would have definitely been more on point. Viper just hasn't sold me. I'm just hoping there's something bigger we're missing right now.

But, as I observed, how crummy is it that Ninja lost a unique and very Ninja-y themed skill only to have a class try to stretch "Kiss of the Viper" into an entire job concept?

If ninja had lost Kiss of the Viper and the new job popped up shortly after, you might have an argument there, but it's been gone for years at this point. At most it's a nod to something long lost from the game, or the job viper could be named after something else entirely.

After Sage used the "snake" motifs with Addersting/Addersgall and arguable "fang" weapons, I don't think any name can really excuse the fact that Viper is just the same motif all over again.

It doesn't seem like the same motif at all to me. "Addersgall" conjures up alchemy references to me; nothing to do with fighting in a style inspired by snakes. I never would have connected sage to that idea, and I don't believe any concept art has either.

Also, I hadn't originally realised both the posts I quoted are from the same person. Both of them seem to be "viper is unoriginal because it's taking all its imagery from [single existing thing]", but they're different things.

Poison isn't the only qualifying feature of a Viper, speed is as well, see my post about "Cottonmouth Viper".

I agree with this, Dragoons don't have Dragon wings or fangs (beyond the skill name).
Ninja doesn't even have a poison and no one bats an eye.

Vipers are animals that strike with speed and from a hiding spot.
If anything just limiting ourselves to poison would be generic and uninspired.

Devs also have to put gameplay first before introducing a poison for poison's sakes.
Complaining because Viper doesn't have poison is just finding any excuses to complain.

I think the name is cool, after all the names for classes and jobs in the game are more rooted on the cultural aspects that surround it than they are "titles" you have gained and own. Hunter is probably the "class/job" or Ranger that "best describes it".
But i bet there are gazillion NPCs that are either hunting or ranging through of all the game.

Having a Soul Crystal is NOT a common thing. In fact basically none of the Jobs is a common thing - Only named characters with special jobs or really strong related to our quest may even contemplate from afar what the WoL with a Soul Crystal is capable off: Why we don't really have mentors/masters anymore.
When a Soul Crystal chooses us, is because we are evidently to the the crystal itself that we are THE ONE that can dominate and explore all the knowledge engraved into stone.

Being a Viper is not a common thing, people might be part of their "guild" - Just think of Reaper or Sage or basically all Jobs.
The NPCs FIND you and inmidiatly think you are a better owner for the Soul Crystal.

People under the wrong impression that Ishgard be full of Dragoons or Dark Knights, Sharlayan full of Sages.
The whole monk Job is basically one dude, there must be a handful of Dragoons out there, and most Jobs are like this.

And is not the same to train and "be titled" a Samurai than to be the singular entity that is capable of extracting the most and explore the depths of the Samurai Soul Crystal - The guys of Kugane be looking at us doing Amakakeru Ryuu no Hiramekis all day long like wtf.

People focusing too much on the weapon and forgetting all about the Soul Crystal. Just saying, we are capable of what we are not because we are dextreous with all and any weapons: We download all that kung fu from the Soul Crystal.

I'd be shocked if they don't have some sort of poison element. Oooh! Build up poison with lighter strikes and then 'detonate' it with the twinblade or something. That reminds me of something but i can't remember what..
