I felt pretty "meh" about it at first, but it's growing on me. I think the name is just supposed to evoke the style of being fast and deadly. If it were an assassin job, the name might feel more fitting. However, with the swords combining to a Twinblade and channeling ancient powers, I'm wondering what it's actual combat style is. The reveal trailer is far too light on details to make any real judgments.

I guess in the absence of any other information on the job, everyone has to doom and gloom about the one thing that they do know: the name

What on earth would change about the job if it was called something else? Is it gonna feel bad or cringe or something, because you have to say 'I'm a Viper main' instead of 'I'm a Blademaster main'? Not to mention, how does Blademaster make any sense? Is a Samurai not a master of the blade? Hunter is already a class from previous FF games, and uses bows, etc

I know I take issue with the most benign stuff in this game sometimes, but even I'm not this picky about stuff jesus

No, it a perfect name. Remind me of 2000 era of xbox360. Keep perfection at it is.

Since back in 2.0 they have said they want to get rid of the class/job system, but it's hard coded and no real reason to get rid of it since it doesn't really do anything now except give you a job crystal. So puting resources into removing the system is kinda pointless. I would like to see them take away job crystals and just make us that job when we hit level 30, or for the ones that have no base just be that job. Other than that, doesn't really matter too much.

As to the name of the new job, will it really matter since most people will just call it by it's abbreviation? The job will be VPR probably.

I think I'm ok with the name. Very clearly snake-themed, though we'll have to see more of the job down the line.
One thing I do like about it is that it doesn't clearly bring to mind a particular "profession", so to speak. Jobs like samurai, ninja, paladin, and the epitome of this, warrior, do.

I feel like it's a mistake to assume there will be poison abilities, despite the "snake theme". To me that primarily goes towards imagery of a quick-striking attack with stabbing blades, with the poison being a secondary idea following that, but less necessary to mimic.

Also, your argument here seems to be circular: "they called it viper, so it must have poison attacks to fit that theme, so they had to call it viper because it has poison attacks."

There's a part of me that's wondering if Viper is going to be the name of the individual who gives us the job crystal, or the organization that individual belongs to, and the devs are just using the name as a placeholder because they are still trying to come up with a good name for the job. I mean, none of the other jobs are named after animals, right?

I prefer Ranger. The job comes from a group of hunters that hunt in a forested area. Ranger would've been a perfect name.

Dragoon is named Dragon Knight in some languages (Chevalier Dragon/Ryuukishi (roughly romanized))

Admittedly, dragons don't exactly exist, but yeh

Also, the name is probably like, the first thing that's banged out in the design meetings. That, and/or the weapon, interchangeably. I'd assume 'scythe user' was settled on before the name 'Reaper'. Either way, announcing a new job and not having the name finalized would be absolutely awful in terms of how many Kotaku articles it'd spawn
