Sometimes I want to get mad because it's kind of crazy how many people are jumping through hoops to be negative about the playstyle of a job when we have no idea what the playstyle is. Like let me remind you that dragoon animation videos from SE have previously featured the stun kick as a part of their rotation. You're not going to figure out whether this is similar to reaper or monk or anything from this video.

But then I remember that half of y'all were born with a brain that thinks cilantro tastes like soap and your opinions aren't really based in reality.

I like it being "down to earth" (outside of the twinsword making no sense if you're going to use it with only one hand and do nothing with the other anyways) but... where's the actual unique stuff, "merely practical" though it may be? Poisons? Cables? Flintlock? Whatever it may be, it feels like we've learned nothing more about this than that it's the umpteenth sword job and its GCD takes a little less of an eternity than most jobs'.

At best we've got some stab-stabs to go with Rogue's swish-swish and an aura that unlocks some manner of pretty generic finisher.

You'd think there'd actually be more of substance revealed here.

Edit: Super nitpicky, but does the DW idle stance seem a bit more... off (absent of intent, exposed, and/or none too fluid, etc.) than most jobs' to anyone else?

And has anything explained why adding so much additional weight to the back of a weapon --to the point of likely making its balance worse-- would give it mightier strikes than being able to better leverage body-weight? It still seems to be used with one hand... with that freed up hand also not being used for anything else anyways? ???

Anywho, so far it looks like the kind of class/job I'd really enjoy, but... feeling pretty starved on actual info here when compared to the likes of the RDM reveal, etc.

I enjoyed the Viper reveal because it gave me a big laugh with my spouse, especially when they announced the name. Randomly saying "VIPERRRR!" is the joke of the day in my household.

I'm personally surprised that they decided to announce the class without showing off anything that would really wow players. All they revealed was the name and the fact that there are two swords that become a swallow; maybe that's enough to excite some players, but it made me think that the class's design isn't anywhere close to finished so they didn't have anything else they were ready to commit to. Maybe it'll be fun to play once it's in our hands, but this feels like the most lackluster reveal of an FF14 class I've ever seen.

Also genuinely surprised that they didn't reveal Green Mage when they've already indicated in-game that it's the caster DPS. But maybe that class is even less finished than Viper?

With Zidane's weapon style, it really pushes the idea of what if Rogue was an actual job rather than a class.

    I have good expectations
I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing Locke in it. I also think they naturally will pull a little Terra into the job since we seem to have a trance mode. With Zidane being the glue that kind of holds it all together.

I'm not getting any Gabranth, which it is sad that we won't see a judge job, but I can swallow that disappointment if they were insisting on a Zidane-inspired job. Not even that I particularly care for or wanted anything from FF IX, but if they had a solid vision then I would rather they go with that first. Question still remains if this vision actually is solid, though.

Not really digging the Viper name. It feels too Assassin-y when I think the job wanted to be more of a Hunter or Ranger archetype. It's trying to be Thief AND Assassin AND Ranger/Hunter (AND Trancer, and possibly Spellblade) and pleasing no one. I suspect they didn't want to use "Hunter" for PC reasons, which I can't blame, but there had to have been better options than "Viper".

It would be different if I could find any real world reference to some sort of hunter or assassin group being called vipers, but the best I've got is Kill Bill.

Wait...is this just the Kill Bill job?

If the Vipers themselves end up being some form of local special forces, then it could turn out to be a fun concept.
All I can think about with this naming choice is that one story from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark from when I was a kid. "I am the viper. I vish to vash and vipe your vindows."

The problem is squares job design is so stale does anyone think there is a legit chance there is going to be something massively out of left field here

I’d say the chances are above 90% that we are going to get a 1-2-3 twinblade is the burst you can do once per minute based on gauge but there is a personal damage buff (blue aura) every 2 minutes that allows for a longer twinblade phase and a 2 minute CD you can do to increase the gauge by 50 with a few random oGCD’s for flavour

There is simply too many jobs for the small design team so at this point we are basically getting shades of the same classes rehashed over and over again, out of 5 melee we already really only have 2 (NIN/RPR, builder spenders and SAM/DRG/MNK, long loopers), when was the last time a class was introduced that actually upset the design philosophies of the game…………6.0 MNK if you stretched it if not……..maybe RDM

To me it looks a bit bland. But I said the same about SAM and then started liking it once I did some leveling. The aesthetics are nice, though. But please be a bit more evolved then "build gauge up and then use". I miss job complexity. ;(

Think they wanted to reveal more of the trailer, and if they didn't reveal Viper it would still confuse people, especially now since it's the poster job for DawnTrail.
Like Gunbreaker they gave us a teaser video, we didn't learn much else until near release if memory servers. Hope we can do more besides slashy-slash, still I'm down for this because I'm big into dual wielding swords in many games.

    This.

When people say "some people are going to complain about anything" or "some people refuse to be pleased", this is the sort of thing they're talking about.

SCH looked boring in the Media Tour but Expedience turned out to be hugely successful and enjoyed by people, and SCH is still the meta pick and has been for all of EW. There's an old saying:

"Don't judge a book by its cover."

At least wait until you see what the mechanics are.

    .

    As for the Job itself:

As a person who loves Rogue/Thief archetypes and dislikes Ninja, I'm happy we finally have a Rogue/Thief JOB (not relegated to a class you just upgrade out of). Though I kinda dislike the whole "will be highly technical" thing. I thought that's what NIN was? Having a second Scouting Job that is also highly technical makes little sense to me...but whatever.

You literally just did what you accuse others of, you read the first part of what I said then jumped on conclusions.
