Thoughts on Viper?

Someone else (Mikey, I think) did a comparison to RPR and GNB (I think?) showing they did very little as well. GNB did their 1 and 3 combo steps, Superbolide, and Heart of Stone, they just did more dynamic angles and "instant replays" of parts of the attack or broke up the attacks, like GNB's -3 [which has 4 swipes] making it look like separate attacks or whatnot..

Yes, GNB was only using 1 2 3 Bolide and Nebula.
It looked very flashy because they interrupted GCDs midway to make the teaser more active.
We didn't see Burst Strike or the Gnashing Fang combo which are the core of the GNB gameplay.

Viper shows:
4 GCDs using 2 swords
1 oGCD swapping stance
1 GCD using the staff sword
1 oGCD (?) blue burst
1 GCD Sky Mirage Dive

Even if we take Reaper of example, all we had was a 1 2 3, Summon your avatar for 1 oGCD and the Enshroud followed by 1 GCD. This last GCD wasn't representative of the fast paced burst of the Reaper.
We didn't had Gibbet & Gallows, Soul Slice, Death's design or the complete representation of Enshroud which are core elements of the RPR gameplay today. This will be the same for Viper.

I for one was disappointed it wasnt a corsair or pirate type thing with pistols or something... Viper doesnt sound bad but it also isnt unique really in any way.

Not the pirate job as expected but I suspect it's an easy class to get into but with a high learning curve.

Time to see everyone renaming themselves to Kirito and all the black armor theyll be using luullll. Im going the Assassins creed Black flag/Rogue route with that armor. More of a piratey look

If they have katana skins for the weapons, I could see a Musashi style becoming popular (or Leonardo with the Kojin costume)

I don't think a class in a video game has ever appealed to me on looks alone. In fact, that's probably the thing that matters the least.

Viper is no different.

Will it FEEL good to play? Will it bring something different to the table in this more and more homogenized environment of FFXIV PvE? That's the kind of thing that I'm interested in. Am I the only one?

Especially because you can play every job in this game, it feels like a waste if they're too similar in gameplay. Aesthetics are whatever because you're going to glam whatever anyways. Lore has been retconned to be whatever for a few jobs, so it's harder to care about than it used to be.

But, Viper's to be a damage dealer AND a melee job, so it may have more freedom to play uniquely than GNB and SGE. By contrast there's more melee DPS jobs than any other sub-role, so maybe they'll struggle to make it different even if they actually try. It's too early to tell or be excited about.

Thoughts are currently still on 'I wish they would bring in 3 jobs again' , 'I wish they would try to make the existing jobs feel more different again, especially within a sub-role' or 'I wish they would give more freedom to party composition so more people can play what they want' instead.
