Hence my desire to use legacy. I really like Auto Face Target, and I'd like to be able to use it without moving in bad directions. Didn't know it tracks mid-cast though, thanks for pointing that out!

This is not true. In standard, I can start a cast either with Auto Face Target on or having turned myself toward the target, and then until the point-of-no-return, I can right-click and spin around as much as I want. It only actually checks for facing the target at the beginning and end of the cast. In the middle, you can look wherever you want, and can thus avoid a Gaze while not interrupting your cast.
