There is just so many things that english can do well, naming Damage Dealers as DPS is not one of them.

Got a little confused...I play naval games so DD means something both much different and also sort of similar.

No name is the thing it refers to; it simply refers to it.

Yes, DD would be a more intuitive name for what that role does and the term would less get in the way of talking about damage-per-second as a cross-role metric, but we've clearly been able to work around its flaws just fine when using it as the signifier.
