    inb4 lock

Just like the Canada Day thread

BUT, before this gets locked, if you live in a state/county that only sells "Safe-and-Sane" type fireworks, buy a shitload of Picolo Petes (Screaming Meanies, whatever, the ones that make the loud scream sound), and mash them up with a hammer. That loosens the gunpowder in them and causes it to all burn at once when lit, blowing up like an M80.

    Have fun and be safe!

    Independence Day Trivia -

July 2nd, 1776 was when the 13 colonies declared independence from the British monarch; independence was declared prior to the Revolutionary War, not after.

The document, Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence was not a declaration, but instead was a document justifying the declaration. The day of July 4th, 1776, was when the DOI was adopted by the 13 colonies, and when Thomas Jefferson had signed the document himself.

It is perhaps one of the few, if not the only holiday, wherein it is meant to actually be celebrated as opposed to be a day of mourning (Easter, Passover, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hannukah, etc. are days of mourning). The first celebration was only 4 days later (July 8th) in Philadelphia where it was celebrated with fireworks, drinks, and other stuff.

The Revolution was very unpopular with the majority of colonists whom themselves were mostly either Torries or just didn't think it'd really affect them.

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on this day in 1826.

July 4th was not declared a federal holiday until 1941.

I'm not religious but I grew up catholic, and Christmas has very little to do with mourning, in fact it's actually meant to be the biggest, most happy celebration of the year. In the 1800s and earlier, it was pretty much standard to be drunk and partying the whole day. It wasn't until the industrial revolution and mass marketing that kids got on board the party train with Santa Claus and presents.

Thanksgiving isn't about mourning either, otherwise it's not be a day about "Giving Thanks." Unless we want to mourn all the Native Americans that died due to the Europeans, but that's what I do on Columbus Day.

Okay, the Catholic religion, they're days of celebration. I'll give you that, but not in many other classical Christian-based religions.

Giving thanks is a manner of mourning or even fasting.

I'm pretty sure the only mourning anyone does on Christmas is if you're a kid who's family doesn't celebrate Christmas while all your other friends get presents.

Seriously, how could celebrating the birth of the Christian saviour be mourning? It's a very happy day.

Too bad people see this as a day to get drunk, and be extremely stupid.

But to those who actually celebrate it, Happy Fourth.
