    Cloud-based Data Centers

This post is mainly feedback for the development team regarding the cloud-based data centers! I think that the only concern I have is that the game servers will slowly become mega servers like in ESO or the weird phasing that GW2 has.

This post is made mostly from the POV of a roleplayer, but we need set Worlds when we arrange to meet. There is not much roleplay in the world that you come across, unless it is pre-arranged. So please don't put the game into a situation where this will be difficult! All I read from other MMORPGs is how difficult it has become to roleplay in those worlds and I don't want this situation to happen in FFXIV!

I don't think that SE wants to use cloud servers because they regard them as slower.

I think their mindset is that cloud servers will be a temporary measure you can DC travel to when it's congested, such as at an expansion launch, or something like that.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

set worlds are pointless in a game like this, ur basically stuck on that server forever if u buy a house, if you decide u dont wanna rp anymore, u loose everything to get out. its not the most ideal situation at all. i DO however think there should be language based servers in eu.

I do not think, that this will happen. Cloud compatibility gives you more flexibility when it comes to scale up or scale down the necessary hardware. If a new expansion is out then there is a huge spike when it comes to the player count. If the hardware is too weak then you have to deal with huge queues and lag spikes etc. It is not a good experience for the players. In a cloud environment you can dynamicly assign more CPU cores and more memory to the server and mitigate negative impact of the player count spikes.

And the opposite situation can also happen. When there is a content drought and many players do not play the game then you can detach some CPU cores and memory from the servers and save money.

Cloud environments have nothing to do with megaservers or phasing. You can have megaservers without cloud if your server hardware is powerful enough.

    Cheers

the cloud servers would just be scale-able to deal with sudden influxes of people for an expac launch and then scaled back down once the rush is over. they wouldn't be used for permanent use like how the normal servers work. just used for msq'ing and minor things. can't get into your own world on 7.0 day 1? just log in to a temp cloud server world and play some on there for the time being.

The fact they think anything is slower than these 19th century ham radios we're playing on now is hilarious.
