Crack-suggestion, what if they made this the 6.x-series MSQ and had some characters (like most of the Scions for example) sacrifice themselves to take the original Twelve's place? 。゚✶ฺ.ヽ(*´∀`*)ノ.✶゚ฺ。

There was a story in this one?

Er... yeah, just like 6.x MSQ it was very shallow and repetitive. Learning more about the Twelve was nice, but the plot didn't feel like much more than an excuse to do so, and all of the major plot twists were easily deducible.

The point you completely missed in your review is the reason the storyteller did this:

Now there is not "mommy Hydaelin, wealthy old scholars, ancient gods snapping their fingers or ancient dragons with removable eyes" protecting the humanity anymore.
No more crystals, no more blessing, nothing.
The only ancient magic still working is the Azem crystal.

In short there aren't "deus ex machina" anymore.
There still is though. They left that construct there that will essentially funnel any prayers to help keep the world established. We are still under the thumb of Venat's horrifying choices.

isn't hard to see what is going in at the end of Thaleia
In the end of ARR, mothercrystal helped us. We lost our blessing when we found Midgardsomr and now humanity lost its guardians. It's time for something new. THE MSQ tell us how we will get ourselves ready for the challenges to come: with tech and a little bit of faith instead of 50% faith and 50% magic.

The ascians were way more powerful than us, they didn't need to rely on tech like the average Garlemald soldier. We are weak in comparison and we will use tech to compensate our vulnerabilities, i would say we will have some interesting interactions in Dawntrail when we show some tricks, like the conquerors did with mirrors.

Anyway, the future isn't bad at wall, sounds really promising. I would change one or two things about the Twelve but what we have now is acceptable. We went through a reset, literally in some places.

Lmmfao OKAY I wasn't the only one. I literally said "damn is that all!?"

And I couldn't agree more with OP. I personally think the twelve deserved SOOOOO much more. I completely get wanting to wrap everything up but FFS lets trade out the time spent on the story of pandemonium, or honest to god turn the Golbez stuff into the 24 man raid. The Twelve would have been 10x more fitting to being MSQ, instead of following the whole plot point of another game.

I agree I don't like that their whole plan was some mystery secret that just ended up so straightforward. I also don't agree with the Twelve that had they been upfront about their plans that we would have tried to stop them. I think it would have been far more emotional knowing the entire time that you were essentially killing them for their wish. I think we also needed more than just 3-4 lines of dialogue for each expressing their history.

I know the whole point of Endwalker is to tie up loose ends to start fresh on a new 10yr giant adventure, and I'm all for that. I also know the ancients are tired and their whole deal was to rejoin the lifestream, not live forever (barring Hermes). I know all that, and still I was hoping that the 12 would be treated a lot more like the aspects. They had gained all of this power throughout the ages, we fight them until we put their power on Empty, and they continue to reside in hopes to help their followers and Ethierys. There are a few holes in this - 1. the whole they're tired deal, but I felt like that could've been pushed aside b/c we've already seen that story multiple times and done better (Hades, Hythlodeus, even Gaia's ascian side to an extent - the entire fight of Hydaelyn was basically this whole 2yr raid series done in a 10min fight). 2. Who's to say there will ever be another WoL as powerful as we are (due to the joinings which now will presumbly never happen again) to drain their aether a second time? 3. What's the point of them hanging around if they don't have the power to help.

Yes I know there are problems, but I feel like stripping Eorzea of that mythos really left this massive whole in an otherwise rich world that the dev team took over a decade to cultivate. "12 guide you," "12 keep you safe, "12 blah blah blah" means literally nothing now. Putting an unfeeling giant prayer router was just.. so dumb to me.

Idk, anyone else have better ideas on how they could've made this better? I don't want to just post "I'm angry blargh!" and would rather give suggestions on what could've helped this raid series. I was so excited for this raid series too, and have wanted to explore this entire plot since those giant symbols actually popped up to imprison Bahamut.

I guess this is just a subjective take, but I play FFXIV to enjoy a medieval-esque fantasy (swords, magic, fantasy, dragons, mystery, etc). Technology definitely has it's place and can be super expansive to the story (Allagans, Machinist, Cid, Garlemald, even some of the ancient peoples of Dalmasca). However, I never saw technology overtaking the fantasy aspects of the story. I don't want to play Final Fantasy Cyberpunk XIV - I'll wait for FF7 for that D:

I have to agree, I even would go as far to say killing the twelve was highly unnecessary given the established circumstances. The fact the four lords conceptually are similar to the twelve being deities that were once just considered ordinary beings. Yet for some reason the twelve need to die to accomplish their goal. Deryk simply revived using a small bit of aether, so the fact the other 11 also couldn’t do that feels ver forced. Worse part is how it almost feels like the twelve don’t feel like our friendship with them was meaningful enough to not kill themselves. There’s something about their choice that feels so absolutely unnecessary that it only left me angry and unfulfilled. I want them to make a follow up quest that just retcons this ending because the twelve shouldn’t have died in the first place.
