The Tragedy about Manderville vs Brilliant Relics

    Preface:
All my Combat Jobs are 90 and I'm an Omnicrafter.

    Manderville:
    - Do whatever for tomes
    - Trade tomes for whatever and upgr-

    Crystalline/Brilliant
    - Bunch of different specific Materials are needed
    - Take notes to know how many of each mat I'll need
    - Which ones do I wanna buy?
    - Which ones do I wanna gather?
    - I get to play both my gatherers
    - Visit a bunch of places across the game
    - Some mats are only available from Bicolor Gemstones
    - Gemstones require engagement with FATEs
    - I get to play with my Combat Jobs
    - Hand craft all mats to HQ manually
    - Get max yield from perfect crafts
    - Help Grenoldt and Mowen get together while assisting the lovely Chora-Zoi improve her craft!

One of these, is engaging. And the other one is not.

This is the tragedy of Endwalker's Relics. They know how to make a good and engaging relic grind. They just chose not to do it for our combat relics this time.

Imagine if Crafter Relics were "Oh just get 1500 Purple Crafter Scrips for every step"

    ...

DON'T DO THAT, FOR THE LOVE OF HYDAELYN, I WILL END YOU

Agree completely. At least the crafting/gathering relics feels like an achievement earned.

My only gripe is that, for the DoH ones, if you can complete one component craft you can complete them all, for any given step.

Not wrong, but you must always procure different materials. You have to engage with each specific job and gather/craft/buy unique mats for each one, and that alone makes each tool so much more engaging than just 1500 more tomes you happened to have anyway.

I don't want tomes for the EW relics but I do have to say that there is an element of crafting relics where you may already have had these items on hand. All I needed to go out and get was some of the lower level items. And once I wrote my crafting macro for the second step (I could just reuse the last for the 1st step) I was able to just use that on all my jobs. The only additional work was the 1 HQ item needed for the 2nd step of the latest if you weren't on a specialist. So I don't feel the DoH side was too much different than having tomes on hand. The DoL was, though, since you have to go out and gather all the items fresh.

Outside of the fact that you definitely don't have a situation where a patch drops, you do the quest to unlock the next relic stage, and you have the required currency on hand to get the next step in the crafting relic there and then. I suppose it's entirely possible someone has all the required mats to begin crafting straight away. But I would say that would actually be a fraction of players...

Yeah, sure. . . "earned". Have the gear, press the macro 60 or so times, collect weapon.

Let's not pretend this is hard.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

As DiaDeem said, you still need to acquire the crafting mats.

And you still need to have the gear to do the macro in the first place, which in itself was something that was time and effort required (unless you had the gil to just buy it all, i suppose). I didn't do that. I gathered, crafted and melded every pieced of gathering/crafting gear that I have, that allows me to macro the components to 100%.

I have all of the big fish. That is a huge grind, and way more rewarding than hitting a macro a couple hundred times after either a) buying mats off the market board or b) just mindlessly gathering for a couple hours and then spamming macros.

Fishing is crazy, and I respect Fishing Titles a lot. The amount of time and dedication some fish require is insane, and I don't know if I have the courage to ever try for it.

But think about it this way though: Would prefer if it became... "Get 1500 White Gatherer Scrips and buy the Aquomaton from some Gnome in Tomra" instead of doing all the steps of prep and dedication that lil guy needs? Doesn't it feel like the whole thing becomes sorta meaningless if it's simplified so much? That's the spirit of the post in its most basic form.

That's two very different things though? We aren't comparing DoH/DoL relics to big fish hunting or pvp frontline achievements or ultimate clearing. The process to acquire DoH/DoL relics is more involved and has more of a sense of achievement than any manderville step. If you wanna say that the fishing relic should be behind some aspect of big fish hunting, I could maybe get behind that. That would be more relevant, wouldn't it?
