- misunderstood the technique, my bad
The way it seems to work is that the only time the game cares about your facing when using abilities is when you start the cast, and end the cast, anything during the cast time the game doesn't bother to check if you're still facing the right direction. This is also why the game will continue to let spells be casted when the target is dead, but ends up failing to cast because, well, there's no valid target when the game goes to check if the cast is successful, it doesn't care about whether it's valid or not in the middle of casting, only when it starts or ends.
I don't bother with the technique honestly, the only time it's relevant is during look-away mechanics, and I'd rather burn an instant cast spell to resolve it than switch to Standard controls.
As a RDM main I have learned that any part of the target's hit box has to be within a certain arc in front of your character to successfully cast. You don't even have to look at the center of it's hit box, as long as a portion is within your character's "sight arc" the cast will go through. This is very useful for uptime on gaze mechanics since those use the "Center Point" of the enemy's hit box and your character's sight arc to determine if you get hit by the gaze mechanic.

Since you bring this up, I'm not sure about the specific sides of the hitbox, but the cone itself is definitely 90 degrees to either side. So as long as the center is not 'behind' your character, it definitely works. That said, I've seen some funny things like being in a hitbox, aiming away from a monster outright, and being able to cast, so it might be hitbox edges, but this seems very inconsistent in practice to me.As a RDM main I have learned that any part of the target's hit box has to be within a certain arc in front of your character to successfully cast. never tried cone before. I think I have the circular one with ignoring distance on. I might give it a try? Though, if I remember correctly, I didn't like it when I couldn't target things not within my character's sight (especially NPCs). I love the men in this game
I finally return to the game! Current goal: getting all my jobs to 90

I've found gaze attacks are the best time to use Phantom Flurry on BLU (cone attack, damage every second, and you're not allowed to move) for this very reasonAs a RDM main I have learned that any part of the target's hit box has to be within a certain arc in front of your character to successfully cast. I thought this was gonna be a "If you had an infinite budget, who (other than the current voice actors) would you cast for each characters?".
It was not.

He is not really casting backwards, his character is turnng to dummy when the cast is finished and instantly turns the other direction again, only works with legacy controls and you need to wiggle/move your mouse a little bit.Hello again!
Today I learned there is a thing called backwards casting! What it is is you can cast while looking away. If you're curious, I learned it from this video:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dln7u8oSZJI skip to 5:57.
As you see, for one frame the caster does look at the enemy then for the other frames looks away (may be iffy if effected by gaze on that single frame). As the video mentions, this is good for gaze attacks from your target while keeping uptime. I do know how to slide cast but would like to learn this single frame strat.
The video itself doesn't really outline how I can do this (as in if there needs to be a settings change or something of that effect). I have looked into this but so far the guides on it are for keyboard. How would I go about doing this on controller? Is there a macro I can make for this?
This is also applicable to healers too (or any job with a timer on its ability/job. Though, I can imagine it is far more flexible for melee) but thought I would learn it for casters first (especially blackmage, given its long cast times).
In general, combat is pretty crappy in FF14, your character turning to the enemy when attacking is utterly garbage but you have no choice because the attack angle is so small.
