Part of the fun is learning the dance. Cause once you learn it you will pass it every single time.

I don't think guides are necessary. They are there if you want it but not mandatory. Cause once you know it..the challenge is gone forever. The fight will happen the same way every single time.

When you deal with human beings, never count on logic or consistency.

I am a new player in FFXIV and wanted to play a Marauder, because i like beefy guys with big weapons. Thats means i have to tank in dungeons, which is quite the responsibility. And so it happens that i got caught off guard by some unknown boss mechanic and died. One of the dps instantly mocked me for it... i wrote down our conversation and would like to hear your thoughts on it:

DPS: wtf how can you die to this?

Me: Sorry, i never did this dungeon before... i didnt know that ability

    DPS: Dont you read guides???

Me: Why would i? Im a casual player and just want to play the game... am i required to know every boss mechanic beforehand?

DPS: You waste everyones time by not reading guides and dying to shit like this

Me: Arguments like this waste peoples time... i died to that and now i try to avoid it in the future

DPS: Just read the damn guides and stop crying

Me: I think people should be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. If you expect everyone to play perfectly, maybe you should not do dungeons with random people

He then responded with some nasty insults and then left the group

What do you think? Am i required to read guides for every dungeon to avoid unessessary deaths? Or am i allowed to learn by making mistakes? Personally i think people like him are the reason why there are so few tanks, because they are afraid of making mistakes...
No, you're not required to read guides for anything. Sounds like you had the misfortune of having the rare toxic player in your party. Most of the time other players will shrug it off or even offer constructive advice on how to handle the mechanics in the future.

If someone goes overboard with the insults, you have the option to report the incident to the GMs if you think it should be. FFXIV takes a harder stance on that sort of thing than many other games. Most of the time, I'll assume it's just someone having a bad day but occasionally they're bad enough they need to be reported.

The majority of people don't read guides for dungeons so that person is wrong.

Never read a guide for anything in this game. That included jumping into EX/Savage duties.

You get more out of it in the long run figuring these fights out yourself rather than just following someone else's instructions. Eventually you'll get to a point where you'll have an idea what kind of attacks something will use simply by looking at the enemy design and battle area.

Exactly. I've recognised attacks and patterns from paying attention rather than just have some script tell me an attack is coming.

I don't recommend this, at least if you're going to be joining random parties in Party Finder. Unless the party is specifically labeled blind, this is considered pretty rude and you run the risk of being scolded, kicked and ultimately blacklisted by people in the party.

    guides are boring
and they make the game more boring. why would you waste the little excitement you may have when you go in for the first time to reach the point faster where you just gonna sleep through it?

Just enjoy going blind for your casual duties and don’t worry about being caught by some mechanics you couldn’t anticipate. To me that’s the best way to enjoy the story and you don’t get it spoiled by watching some vid. I really don’t mind rezzing new players going blind when I go as healer (plus it gives me something to do) or a job that can rez.

Only thing I recommend for casual duties, is checking a general guide (not duty specific) about markers so you know what different markers do like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...anics_to_help/

If it’s an extreme or savage, as others have said, unless it’s the ARR extremes (several sprouts queue them blind after getting the quest), usually it is expected to have looked at a guide (often PF refers to a specific one) unless otherwise mentioned. Blind progs are pretty common when content is fresh but not so much after a week or two. You can also start your own Party Finder for those and indicate that you are going blind in the description though it may take time to fill for content that has been released a while ago though

That's for extreme trial or savage content. Let him leave and take his 30 minutes penalty.

Yeah, and that's bad news. You'll be blacklisted by the only 30 people that bother with the content.
