To be honest it just common etiquette to wait on everyone to gather round the chest before opening. You need to have a talk with your party members.

some people might think the same think as the OP did, in that if you're not near the chest you cant get anything, so they try to open it as fast as possible to eliminate competition for seals. I personally will NOT open the chest cuz i think its bad luck :P
Ya, nothing needs to be fixed here really, you can still get items, you just don't see who got the items Ifrit isn't you and not near them.
I think I got what you're saying. The fact that I can't see what others get because I'm too far from the chest, doesn't preclude me from getting items? So in these circumstances this has happened, this means I wouldn't have gotten anything anyhow. Correct?
Indeed, correct
I have been next to the chest and gotten nothing (not even Grade 5 Dark Matter ; ; ). So it is possible to get nothing. And if you are far away from chest, yes, you will see nothing and get nothing and wonder if anyone opened the chest ^.^;. That is an unfortunate and I hope it is fixed in future.
Not sure what 'etiquette' is, but to me, it is more fun for all us adventurers to stand around the chest and open it together, as we all earned it together.
Now, some people believe /grovel /bow and (soon: /pray) are the magic emotes that increase the chance of a drop. But this is all hog-wash, as everyone knows its all about direction and having a taru dancing whilst opening it that increases the drop rate.
Good luck in there ^.^
My groups usually gather around chest then open.
You should probably replace the person that keeps opening the chest with a decent human being that waits for people to get there.
