For Those Who Main Tank Jobs, Why Continue Being A Tank?

I'm having a crisis of faith and just need a reminder of why I decided to Tank for the DPS and Healers.
For me, I started as a DRG for MSQ and maxed level all of my jobs last year. During the journey I've experienced hardship and pain (mostly due to queue times) but the experience has humbled me somewhat. I figured, LFGs and Duty Finders always seem to have Tank roles in high demand. I experienced suffering, so I do not wish for anyone else to share the same hardships as I had. I queue as a Tank so no one has to wait long queue times and it simply feels good to be helpful.

How about the rest of you Tanks? Why be a Tank?

Because I like support roles in everything I've ever done that has the option. Most want to be Damage Dealers and that is fine. I like functionality and utility.

In DnD? I'm usually the healer first, tank second, and utility 3rd. Even when I made my Rogue I built him to be at his best outside of combat. His skills were on the end of "If I choose to do this...I'll likely succeed unless the check was 20 or higher." Made him I think a thief subclass and gave him the Fast Hands perk. Why? Area Denial and for ending Death Throws. Also had Longbow Specialty. Want near me? I can peg you easily from 100+ feet, Dash and attack, or move and throw balls on the ground, or caltrops. I just didn't know about Sneak Attack and how often I could get that in. I ended up being the Damage Dealer on top of everything else. Someone goes down? Let me move to you, force a potion in your gullet to stabilize you, and for funzies let me shoot someone and still get my Sneak Attack cause someone else was near the target.

So in short most like to be Big Numbers. I like to make sure they are alive to do those numbers. Maybe I have a Russian approach to it...you got those numbers cause you are alive and thus your numbers are OUR numbers comrade.

For the most part, it's just my style. It's my forte and it's normally what I'm best at due to it normally being an in-demand role regardless if it's braindead easy or requires some effort to accomplish.

I like holding enemies off of party members and friends and the feeling of "you're stuck here with ME" without it being too overpowered with virtually zero effort (looking at you, WAR).

But there's the caveat. While it is what I enjoy most in MMO's they stripped basically everything that made it enjoyable for me in Shadowbringers (skill-ceiling and fun gameplay) and replaced it with nothing. While it still is my main role in any given game I play if I can make myself that way, I've since branched out into dps more in ffxiv because they're still somewhat enjoyable for me to play currently.

TLDR; Tanking is what I excel at and like the most flavor-wise in MMO's, for better or worse

I wish I could feel confident playing a tank. All the years I have played MMOs I never played a tank role. It may have something to do with how I grew up though. Playing army with my older brother and his friends they would only let me be the nurse being a female back then women were not in combat roles so I always was a healer. Fast forward to MMOs I just never tried it and always thought I would be bad at it. I admire people who are tanks for the control they maintain over a boss or dungeon though.

I would say give it a shot. Just start at the earliest dungeon and work your way up. If worried about how others would feel you can try Duty Support.

As a healer main im sure you've kept your eye on the tank so you would have a good understanding of what a good tank looks like...so now you can see what it feels like.

Isn't tank the favorite of the devs? I mean it does decent damage and is basically the main character of the group. Mobs move to you and in response to you. You can interupt actions (yes i know not just tanks), shield and ALSO do nice damage. Some can even heal well
No need for other roles ^^
