Since I hate my life, I decided I'm just sticking in one zone until I get all the crystals before moving on to the next but it's still ridiculous with the drop rate being, or rather not being what it is.

Is someone going to tell them?Or unlucky like me and do 20+ fates in a zone and don't get a single drop. It sucks and it has no logical reason to anymore especially when you have to sync down for fates.
It's the beginning of a long slog and it's also 10 year old content. The drop rate should at least be 25%, if not 50%
Don't think anyone has done 11 sets of atmas in a day or two, assuming that's a quiet jab at me. It took me a few weeks to grind that out.I am consistently hopping zones every 4-5 FATEs, and it's so absurd because I can hop through the entire list and get nothing. Then I start the next day from central shroud, drop 2 maiden atmas one fate after another and then nothing else drops for the rest of the day.
I genuinely do not understand how can someone defend RNG, it doesn't reward focus and hard work, it rewards dumb luck. A player can spend well over a week trying to get all the atma crystals, while another player can just get insanely lucky and have 11 sets of atmas ready in like a day or two. That is hardly fair.
If at the very least completing FATEs actually gave something useful so as to compensate for lost time other than pocket change of Gil and GC seals.
I'm not against improvements towards RNG, it's just more so that this is older optional content. There's worse older content out there in that regard I feel. Would rather they focus on not making that mistake again, with this as their reminder.
Not trying to snark at you, but I was able to get all atma in a weekend over about 4 hours lazily grinding. Is someone going to tell them?

It was not fun and I’d never do it again, but I did. I was able to grind Excalibur in a week, mostly a few hours a day.
I didn’t feel my rng was particularly good, but rng gonna rng.
I highly doubt 11 sets are possible in a weekend, but a try hard no-sleep balls to the wall kinda guy might be able to pull it off.
The reason I asked them is because I grinded out 11 sets of atma(was going for 12 before I realized there were only 10 jobs in ARR). It's actually posted up here on the forums in a topic of its own, so I assumed they were poking at that. Not trying to snark at you, but I was able to get all atma in a weekend over about 4 hours lazily grinding.

Not to snark you in return, but you're attempting to make a point towards someone who is on the same side of the discussion as you.

I remember completing a couple ARR relics when they were new. Was definitely a little bit of a time investment back then. Did a few later after the process steps had been hit with a number of nerfs and it was considerably faster. However there was a more noticeable feeling of accomplishment with the ones finished before all the quest nerfs.
It's not the Alexandrite that's bad for the materia step, it's the actual materia. Grade 1-3 materia can't be bought from any vendors, which naturally means they're somewhat inflated on the MB, and it's an absolute chore to spiritbond them yourself.
I guess my main point is more directed to OP- that RNG does suck, but it’s not really THAT unreasonable to farm up a single set of Atma.
All good!
I don't mean to be condescending but... you seriously have no idea what you're talking about if you think current ATMA is bad. Nowadays, you can finish your 12 ATMA grind in just a couple hours. You'd be lucky to get A SINGLE DROP within 4 - 6 hours of grinding when it was new. Drop rates were so low that people thought the quest was broken. We used to have theories as to what made some ATMAs drop faster, such as... Rain makes it more likely to get an ATMA in La Noscea. Non of that was ever true, but we were just coping with how bad it actually was.
Don't get me wrong, after making a few Zetas when they were current and after farming 1080 FATEs for all ShB relics, I also hate FATE grinding, but the truth is that current ATMA is one of the most mild proper grinds the game has to offer these days.

All the theories reminded me of all the crazy theories people would come up with in ff11 for crafting success rates.I don't mean to be condescending but... you seriously have no idea what you're talking about if you think current ATMA is bad. Atma step has you needing to have that relic equipped while doing the fates to get said atma drop. If you don't then yeah, enjoy hours of no drops.
I recently did this step on paladin amd took me 1-2 hours max
