The Evolution of FFXIV: From Chocobos to Spaceships!

    Hey fellow adventurers,

I couldn't help but notice the recent additions to our beloved Eorzea (or should I say Etheirys, am I right? Hahaha), and I must say, it's been quite the journey! From Chocobos to spaceships, it seems like we've come a long way in terms of scale, scope and plot.

I mean, who would've thought us Warriors of Light would be piloting starships to defeat primals in the far reaches of the cosmos? Travelling through time? Opening diplomatic relations with other intergalactic species? Awakening chaos gods? It's like we've gone from fantasy to science fiction overnight!

With so many opportunities and so much potential, it's probably better to just forget about all of that and just hit the pause button. We can always circle back after some face time. Don't we want to be adventurers going on low stakes adventures, anyway? Let's not forget our roots, our north star hasn't changed. Don't you miss the simpler days of hunting down notorious monsters, slaying dragons, and exploring mysterious dungeons?

I, for one, can't wait for the New World!

It's been that way since the very first FF game which started out as a Dungeons and Dragons copy seen through a Japanese prism (European medieval swords-and-sorcery fantasy)... before suddenly throwing in robots, submarines, holograms, a flying castle populated with armoured mechs, time travel, and of course an airship.

And successive games in the series just built on that, some games having more contemporary or futuristic worlds or more "European Middle Ages with airships and guns". FFXIV is no different.

Exactly. The guy's only played one Final Fantasy and it's 14. In fact, 14 literally has references of every game that came before AND 15.

Going into SPACE?! Flying to the MOON?! I can't think of a SINGLE Final Fantasy that did THAT!

Oh wait. Final Fantasy 4, Lunarians. Namingway. Literally end fight on the moon.
Final Fantasy 7. Rocket Town. Large Materia.
    Final Fantasy 8. Ragnarok.
Final Fantasy 9. A spaceship literally takes us to the next planet to inexplicably fight a God we didn't even know existed.

I mean, if it's JUST absurd and nothing to do with JUST space? Pick a number.

You can tell who's born in the last two decades when it comes to bad parodies and worse logic and research.

And that kind of mix of fantasy and science fiction wasn't even invented by Final Fantasy. You had space travel in the old Ultima I game from 1980, more than half a decade before the first FF game. Dungeons and Dragons itself had a module starring a crashed space ship (S3, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks) just as early.

Anyone who had ever played a Final Fantasy game before this. None of this is new. Just surprising it took us this long to get here.

This isn't a mandate, we just need you to be with the team on this one.

Exactly. Our north star hasn't changed. Our value proposition is much more than just a suite of content. We have evolved our content into a real ecosystem where software and hardware work in symbiosis with players, developers and maintenance staff. Final Fantasy Fourteen Online is constantly growing as a result of this constant interaction between technology and people.
