While I understand the notion of making the game more immersive, the problem isn't just flying, aetherytes, porting, etc. What would that do? Make us run through safe zones? Is there ever really any danger? Even on foot you can outrun mobs before they kill you. The fixes would have to go beyond porting/aetherytes, flying, etc.

"Make mobs be aggressive and hard" aka if you somehow pull more than 2, then youd be screwed.

Although at this point Im asking for FFXIV to be like classic WoW with everything in its core design, but I know that theres so much that the game needs to fix. It has to be an entirely different game than what it currently is at this point.

I mean, one only needs to remember that despite having a better designed overworld for their game, WoW did try to completely remove their flying feature once and to say it was a catastrophe would be an understatement. Plus it did nothing to solve the issues they believe it caused or did the overall health of the game improve as their claims said it would.
XIV's overworld isn't even close to being in the same position to where they can try to justify cutting flying and/or atherytes and they very likely aren't going to attempt it either.

I think it would be nice to have a 10- or 30-minute boat ride the first time we go someplace, with teleportation available after that.
    Thirty minutes.??

Hell to the NO. This is a game not me commuting to work.

Haha, that's a valid reaction. But I really loved traveling by boat to get somewhere the first time in FFXI; that 30-minute boat ride truly made the world feel big, and going to a new place by boat was exciting. Also probably worth saying, things happened on the boat, as it was a whole ship to explore with multiple levels. Folks would fish, sea creatures would cause trouble on deck, sometimes the boat would be attacked by ghost pirates and the weak players would have to hide below deck while the stronger players fought them off.

Not for everyone. I understand why it's gone. But forcing that to happen one time for a set number of locations might help the world feel big. That's something you lose when a ship ride halfway across the world takes the same amount of time as a teleport.

Sea Horror spawns, everyone dies, people at destination port waiting for boat to arrive see a pile of bodies pour out of the boat... lol good times :3

that 30-minute boat ride truly made the world feel big,

No it felt tedious and a waste of my time. Thirty minutes when I could be doing other things. WOs flight paths are loop de loop de loop...the shortest distance between two point sis a straight line.

But forcing that to happen one time for a set number of locations might help the world feel big.
So now its more than one 30 minute waste of time? What do you suggest i do in that 30 minutes?

    Hard pass.

We have a world map to show us how far we're travelling.

And the only times we've actually taken ship rides around the world, it has been for plot reasons, and usually involves some amount of cutscenes along the way.

An enforced half-hour wait to continue the story would add nothing but frustration.

Or they could essentially take a page from games like Xenoblade where most zones had some enemies that were extremely high level making it so when travelling through them later you weren't completely aggro proof. Some of those enemies were even migratory and would wander around large paths of the maps. FFXI even did this to a degree as well though it was generally due to either that specific part of the map being tied to a later part of the game or the monster in question being an NM or HNM.

I would like a mix of aggressive mobs that would follow you through the zone until you zone into another zone and passive mobs.
