Honestly, if you think the death penalty was the worst part of FFXI, you must have not really gone past level 10. Considering if you spent 30 minutes in a merit PT you'd have about a months worth of experience to burn through endgame wise.

Edit: Not to mention leveling areas would actually be populated again. Natalan is pretty empty these days, if you're lucky you'll actually see a party at the wolf camp.

    Hardly, a bold assumption though.

It's not really a point of how quick one can recover their lost EXP, or even build a buffer for future losses based on strategic uses, it's about not wasting that time doing that.

I spent many years (Six for the curious) playing XI and PLD was my role 90% of the time. Even if the recovery of my EXP was speedy (and it usually was) it was still an annoying fact that I was losing EXP, not because I didn't think twice about my actions, but rather I was serving my duty to my LS in Dynamis etc.

There's nothing more lame than wasting time gaining back EXP you lost because you were helpful/useful. Not when you could be spending that time accumulating merit points based on your comment. Or doing other things like leveling other jobs etc.

I probably play XIV more than I should, but even I agree that exp loss is a waste of time, I'm too old for that crap.

    xD

Pretty much this. Even in XI, I never enjoyed EXP loss. :<

Except, if you were in a typical HNMLS, your day was filled with events that could quite feasibly cause you to lose exp, and when you finally got the free time to join a merit pt, some HNM or other would pop, and you'd have to ditch your party. I'm sure it varied from LS to LS, but the one I was in could have events/HNMs spanning over the course of an entire day, leaving no room whatsoever to merit. Well, unless you chose to forgo sleep/going to work, anyway.

Nevermind if your main LS job was BLM. No merit pt for you in that case. Nope, carry your tail to puddings and hope the other endgame BLMs weren't doing the same thing you were.

You want an hardcore gaming experience, do this:

    - Every time you die, delete your character and start from scratch OR drop all the gear you were wearing at the moment of your death.
Ain't that hardcore enough for you? And you don't even need the devs to code it as you can manually do it.

There, you have your "thrilling" death penalty. Don't force it on others that have a life and play casually.

Geez wiz, do you know how to read? I asked for deleveling, not perma-death.
And stop that color/font change, makes you seem like you're trying hard to fish for attention and you're being a little pretentious.

Deleveling was a necessary element as the game doesn't punish you enough for dying in FFXIV.
Oh look, your gear condition has lowered by 10%! And you have to return to a home point. Is this supposed to be scary? NO.
I want to feel terrified of dying. I want to **** my pants every time I enter a dungeon or face a threatening enemy. This game NEEDS the element of constant fear.
Stop cattering to the casual market, and please try to bring back hardcore elements from the old FFXI days.

Please bring back deleveling for 2.0!!!
well unfortunately they want to cater to both casuals cause apparently us hardcore are a dying breed. so they can make as much money as possible. Theres no way for them to find an equal ground. The stuff they add for casuals, hardcores blow through it in no time and complain this stuff is to easy, and they add stuff like relic and casual complain that they cant get it.

But to death penalty, it does NOTHING, it doesnt add fear like you want , it an annoyance, yes. But all i think is oh great now i can wear that one piece of 50 gear if your wearing anything thats 50. The Brink of death status at your second death is penalty enough. Running back to your body, or Having to work of an xp debt, or deleveling was not a good system at all.

    Voting no on exp penalty.

How about SE just make it incredibly difficult to repair items. We get the same amount of dmg to our gear, but no NPC can repair it... AND, switch back to specific items needed to repair specific armor/weapons. Basic items like crafted gear etc can still use dark matter, but if you say want a pair of "fists of the sixth sun" repaired, YOU would need to go back to the source (Cactuar Jack) or similar mob, and gather the repair item. Key item perhaps, so it doesn't take inventory, after which u have to go to a crafter, and bring up a trade window with your item, plus key item required to repair (plus potential reward).
That way, if your helping out some friends, and have a high chance of dying, maybe you won't equip your relic weapon...
So your weaker when your fearful, but when the going gets tough, you'll put a bit of extra work on the line to down Leviathan/Carbuncle/Whoever rocks up lol
